Browns Expected to Lose Another Key Coach After Hiring Todd Monken

The Cleveland Browns finally landed on a new head coach on Wednesday morning, as they hired former Baltimore Ravens‘ offensive coordinator Todd Monken to come in and be their replacement for the recently fired Kevin Stefanski. The decision to hire Monken was a surprise, and the fallout in the immediate aftermath of this move has been mind-boggling.

From a Browns’ perspective, the team appears set to lose defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, who is not happy to have been passed over for this job. Cleveland has already lost offensive coordinator Tommy Rees this offseason, and in the wake of Monken’s hiring, reports indicate that special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone could also be headed for the exit door himself.

Bubba Ventrone Not Expected to Remain with Browns After Todd Monken Hiring

Usually, when a team hires a new head coach, it provides them with some stability heading into the offseason. For the Browns, though, the opposite has been true. Monken could turn out to be a great hire, but his arrival has made a bad situation in Cleveland even worse, and it’s become abundantly clear he’s going to have his work cut out for him.

Monken knew he was going to have to hire an offensive coordinator right away after Rees followed Stefanski to the Atlanta Falcons. However, the Browns still had Schwartz as their defensive coordinator and Ventrone as their special teams coordinator. Schwartz unsurprisingly appears set to depart, though, and it looks like Ventrone could be following right behind him.

Ventrone has turned himself into one of the top special teams coordinators in the league, as he’s spent the past three years with Cleveland. With Monken arriving, though, that has opened the door for Ventrone to leave. And with the Los Angeles Rams already requesting to interview Ventrone for their special teams coordinator opening, the expectation is that he won’t be returning to the Browns for the 2026 campaign.

“The Browns may now have to replace all three coordinators: The Rams put in a request to interview Bubba Ventrone for their special teams coordinator job, per sources,” Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported in a post on X. “Ventrone, who is regarded as one of the NFL’s best, is not expected to stay on Todd Monken’s staff.”

Todd Monken Could Have to Hire Three New Coordinators to Coaching Staff

It’s pretty common to see a new head coach bring in his own guys to work for his coaching staff, so it’s worth noting there’s a decent chance Monken would have moved on from both Schwartz and Ventrone anyways. He may not have a chance to decide whether he wants to keep them, though, as both guys appear set to move on.

The Browns are already a bit late when it comes to hiring Monken, and now, he’s going to face an uphill battle to fill all three of the coordinator roles on his staff, as several of his potential candidates have found new gigs across the league. Monken has only been Cleveland’s head coach for a couple of hours, but things have already devolved into chaos for him, and he hasn’t even done anything yet.
