Broncos’ Week 16 game at Chargers flexed to prime time Thursday night slot in historic move

The Broncos are moving to prime time.

In a first-of-its-kind move, Denver’s Week 16 game at the Los Angeles Chargers has been flexed from Sunday afternoon to Thursday night.

That means the game moves from Dec. 22 up to Dec. 19.

The NFL can’t force teams to play two Thursday night games on the road, meaning the Broncos signed off on the move from a Sunday afternoon game to prime time.

As a result of the change, Denver will have less time to prepare for the Chargers after a Week 15 home game against Indianapolis, but more time going into its Week 17 game at Cincinnati.

The date for that Week 17 game has not yet been finalized, either, and could end up either on Saturday or Sunday, Dec. 28-29. The Bengals were originally supposed to get the extra rest by playing Thursday night, but their game against Cleveland gets moved out of that slot and to Sunday afternoon.

This is the first time in league history that a Thursday night game has been the subject of flex scheduling.

This story will be updated.
