Highlight: Quarterback Bo Nix strengthened his case for Offensive Rookie of the Year. On Sunday, he picked apart Atlanta’s defense, going 28 of 33 for 307 yards and four touchdowns. He set the tone in the first half, completing 17 of 19 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns. But he wasn’t the only rookie that stood out. Wide receiver Devaughn Vele once again showed he can be a reliable target in the middle of the field. He finished with four catches for 66 yards and had a 33-yard reception in the second quarter. Rookie wideout Troy Franklin recorded his second touchdown reception of the season while edge rusher Jonah Elliss increased his sack total to three.
Lowlight: Running back Audric Estime’s production took a step back after a modest performance last week. Estime only had six carries for 16 yards (2.7 per attempt). Javonte Williams had the hot hand — nine carries for 59 yards — and Sean Payton stuck with it.
Looking ahead: It will be intriguing to see how the Broncos will utilize Vele and Franklin once veteran Josh Reynolds is activated. Vele has hit his stride, recording eight catches for 105 yards and a touchdown the last two games. Reynolds, who has been on the injured reserve due to a finger injury and was also involved in a shooting last month, was solid when healthy. When he does return, how involved will Vele be? The Broncos have been searching for consistent playmakers, and Vele is starting to trend in that direction.
Unsung Hero
Broncos defensive line: Denver’s defensive front did a solid job at containing Falcons star running back Bijan Robinson throughout the afternoon. Robinson only had 10 carries for 35 yards, rarely getting much room to run. He had 18 yards on five attempts in the first quarter but just 17 yards on seven attempts in the final three quarters.
Goat of the game
P.J. Locke: The goal line was calling Locke’s name. During the Falcons’ opening drive of the third quarter, Denver’s starting safety had a clear path to the end zone but dropped a potential interception. Locke told The Denver Post last week that it’s been challenging to play with a cast on his left hand. The cast could’ve cost him six points.
