Bridge malfunction in River North halts boat migration from Lake Michigan

Some boaters traveling from Lake Michigan to their winter storage spaces Wednesday had to turn around after a mechanical issue with one River North bridge.

Bridges along the Chicago River are lifted every Wednesday and Saturday morning throughout the fall to allow boats from the lake to drive through to winter storage areas.

The Wells Street bridge could not be lifted Wednesday because of a “mechanical issue,” causing boats to return to the lake throughout the afternoon, Chicago Department of Transportation spokesperson Erica Schroeder said.

Crews are conducting emergency repairs, and they will test the bridge overnight, Schroeder added.

The next bridge lift is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday. They will continue through Nov. 13.
