Boston Red Sox Receive Strong Ranking After First Series of 2026

The Boston Red Sox had an interesting offseason. They lost Alex Bregman in free agency to the Chicago Cubs, but still managed to add players such as Ranger Suarez, Willson Contreras, Caleb Durbin and Sonny Gray.

Unfortunately, they are off to a bit of a rough start this season, having gone 1-3 in their first four games and losing their first series of the season to the Cincinnati Reds.

Still, it’s too early to panic for the Red Sox. They still have a strong team on paper and should be able to turn things around quickly. Grant Brisbee, Chad Jennings and Levi Weaver of The Athletic still had them at No. 7 in their latest power rankings.

“The Red Sox had a weird start to the year,” Jennings wrote. “They pitched well (2.30 ERA), but Sonny Gray struggled in Game 2 and a pair of trusted relievers lost a couple of games. Outside of Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu and Marcelo Mayer, the lineup didn’t do a ton. Maybe there’s a spark to be found in Yoshida, who had five plate appearances and reached base in three of them.”

Boston Red Sox Struggling, But Not Out Yet

There is still a lot of time left for the Red Sox to figure things out. The loss of Bregman certainly hurts, and it has led to some offensive struggles early on.

Perhaps giving Yoshida some more at-bats could help, but it is going to be hard to do that considering that he is mainly a designated hitter and the Red Sox already have some solid left-handed hitting outfielders ahead of him.

Their current outfield consists of Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu and Roman Anthony, and it would not be a good idea for them to take at-bats away from any of those players. Still, it’s too early for Red Sox fans to panic. This is still a solid team on paper that should eventually find its groove. They also still have a very strong starting rotation, so that cannot be overlooked.

But the key to a turnaround will be their offense. If they can find a spark somewhere and come out of their funk, they should be okay. But they’ll have to do it quickly.

So far, there don’t appear to be any major causes for concern, as it is a long season, but the Red Sox would be better off figuring things out now rather than later.

Red Sox’s Outlook for Rest of 2026

The American League East is an incredibly difficult division to play in. The Red Sox have to deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and the vastly improved Baltimore Orioles.

Boston finished third in the AL East last season and earned the second AL wild card before falling short against the Yankees in the first round. It will be interesting to see if they can pull themselves out of their rut and get back into the AL East race before it’s too late.

As of now, there still isn’t much cause for concern.
