Boston Red Sox Predicted to Trade $87 Million Infielder to Rangers

The Boston Red Sox have had a rough start to the reason there’s no denying that, but at what point do wholesale changes need to be made? After the firing of Alex Cora, things haven’t exactly been looking up for the Red Sox, and a recent development has been some drama taking place between some of the younger players and the veterans in Boston’s clubhouse. So, could this lead to a meaningful trade made by Craig Breslow and the Red Sox front office?

A recent MLB mock trade proposal by FanSided.com writer Mark Powell features the Red Sox linking with the Texas Rangers in a trade that would send first baseman Willson Contreras to the Rangers for two highly touted prospects.

Red Sox Trade Prediction Offloads Willson Contreras

Per Mark Powell, the Rangers could be the best fit for Willson Contreras if the Red Sox were to trade him:

“Contreras raised some alarms in the Red Sox clubhouse (as he often does unprompted). Marcelo Mayer’s response, seemingly hinting at a young players vs veterans dynamic in Boston, made it clear that Contreras is, at the very least, a distraction. At worst, he’s a problem that must be dealt with. So, why not a trade?”

Willson Contreras was just acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals via an offseason trade. He is signed through 2027 on a five-year, $87 million deal.

“Fans in Arlington deserve better, especially at the first base position, where the Rangers rank near the bottom of MLB in fWAR at first. That includes at the plate, where Jake Burger and Josh Smith haven’t exactly lit the world on fire. Burger has just a .636 OPS, a full 200 points less than Contreras.”

In the trade idea, Powell proposes that the Rangers give Boston two prospects, Yolfran Castillo and Emiliano Teodo. If the Red Sox become sellers, given the clubhouse drama between Contreras and Mayer, the 3X All-Star Contreras could be a hot commodity.

Would the Red Sox Make This Trade?

While the Boston Red Sox need to make wholesale changes in their organization, trading away Willson Contreras might not be the way to do it, and while it seems like a strong prospect package, Boston just gave up a strong package that included Hunter Dobbins to the Cardinals to acquire Contreras.

Willson Contreras is hitting .270 this season with an OPS+ of 142, seven home runs, and four doubles.

Also, trading away Contreras would mean Craig Breslow basically admitting acquiring him was a bad idea, which doesn’t seem in his best interest.

There’s still time for Boston to turn it around, and if they do, it will be Willson Contreras at the forefront of that turnaround.
