Blue Jays Predicted to Trade for Angels’ 0.33 ERA Starter After Shane Bieber News

The Toronto Blue Jays may need to start thinking about rotation reinforcements. After winning the AL Pennant, Toronto has been hit hard with injuries to pitchers to start 2026.

On Monday, it was announced that Shane Bieber is being transferred to the 60-day IL. Trey Yesavage and Jose Berrios remain on the IL, and Max Scherzer hasn’t been able to pick up any slack for the pitching staff. Is a trade on the horizon for the Blue Jays?

A recent MLB mock trade prediction by FanSided’s Mark Powell would see the Blue Jays land Los Angeles Angels‘ starter Jose Soriano in exchange for prospects Arjun Nimmala and RHP Jake Bloss.

Jose Soriano’s Stellar Start to 2026 Will Lead to Trade Speculation

If the Angels decide they want to trade their most valuable assets in the summer months, several teams will come calling on starter Jose Soriano, who is boasting a microscopic 0.33 ERA over 27 innings pitched this season, and 31 strikeouts (leads MLB).

Powell believes that the Jays could make a deal work due to Toronto being desperate for a starter:

“Soriano is throwing like a Cy Young candidate in April, but at some point he will slow down. In 2025 he had a 4.23 ERA across 31 starts. He is a solid middle-of-the-rotation starting pitcher who can bring some heat. But, the Blue Jays will have to pay up for the 27-year-old because of his contract status and their own desperation.”

The Angels have actually been a semi-surprising team in MLB to start 2026. They are 8-8, but considering Jose Soriano is 4-0 in his own right, he’s a strong reason for most of Los Angeles’s success this year.

Should the Blue Jays Trade for Jose Soriano?

The question shouldn’t be ‘should the Blue Jays trade FOR Jose Soriano’, but rather ‘would the Angels trade AWAY Soriano’, and the answer to that question is likely ‘No’.

However, this trade package that Mark Powell proposes is pretty strong, and makes sense due to the Angels in somewhat of a rebuilding period, and adding two of the Blue Jays’ top-10 prospects would be a strong return for Soriano.

It’s a phenomenal start to the season, no doubt about it, but also as Powell mentions, Jose Soriano will certainly give up some runs in the near future, but he’s a strong name to keep an eye on as hot stove season (in a couple months) approaches.

One thing is certain, though: the Blue Jays may have to turn towards the external market to acquire a starting pitcher before it’s too late.
