Blue Jays Make George Springer Announcement During Twins Game

The Toronto Blue Jays could be without George Springer once again.

Springer returned from the injured list on April 29 and returned to the lineup on April 30. Now, just days later, he got hit by a pitch on the same broken toe that put him on the injured list, and was forced to leave the game.

Springer was down in pain for quite some time as the training staff and Blue Jays manager John Schneider looked at him. After some time, Springer got up and was helped straight to the clubhouse, and didn’t even try to test to see if he could play.

It’s disappointing news for the Blue Jays, who have gotten off to a slow start and have started to get healthy and turn the page.

Springer is in the final year of his six-year, $150 million deal with the Blue Jays. He’s hitting .212 with 2 home runs and 7 RBIs this season.

Springer Dealt With Toe Injury

The injury to Springer is concerning, as he just returned from the toe injury.

Springer fractured his left big toe, and despite returning from the injured list, it wasn’t completely healed. However, it was good enough for Springer to bat and run the bases. But he did have some added protection to his shoe.

Ahead of his return to the lineup, Springer said it was something he just had to deal with.

“I mean, I don’t really put expectations on it. I’ve just expected it to hurt,” Springer said. “I’m not going into it thinking it’s going to feel good, and then when it hurts, I just get angry about it. It’s a broken bone. So, you know, not much I could do besides just say, ‘Screw it, is what it is.’”

Springer said if it were the playoffs, he would have played through it. But he felt the 10 days on the injured list would have been good enough for him.

“I obviously want to play, but I got to be smarter at the same time,” Springer said. “So it’s kind of one of those where I get a little antsy. But I have to trust the medical staff. And I trust them wholeheartedly.”

However, despite taking 10 days off, Springer could go back on the injured list after being hit by a pitch on the same toe.

Blue Jays Turning Page

Toronto is starting to play much better, and it’s due to the offense starting to get healthier.

Following the Blue Jays 7-1 win over the Twins on Friday, Schneider had plenty of praise for how the team is playing.

“Everyone kind of knew what they were doing — this guy’s going to grind, this guy’s going to make contact, this guy we want to slug,” Schneider said. “We’re still sorting through that, really, to be honest with you. And the domino effect of not having guys. It leads to some guys trying to do things that they’re not great at or do too much.

“It’s a constant thing we talk about every day. The important thing is figuring out that now. Yeah, you can dream of what it looks like when you get Lukey (Nathan Lukes) and (Addison) Barger and (Alejandro) Kirk and whoever back. You’ve got to figure out everyone, really, and how they fit with one another.”

Toronto is off to a 15-17 start.
