Bears QB Caleb Williams sees ‘slow growth’ in offense, promises improvement

Bears rookie Caleb Williams is one of three quarterbacks to throw 50 or more passes in a game this season, and while that doesn’t seem like a viable path for their offense, Williams is willing to do it again if necessary.

“I’m a guy, and I said this to [offensive coordinator Shane Waldron] this morning, if I’ve got to throw the ball 50 times, I’ve got to throw the ball 50 times,” Williams said Wednesday before practice. “But if we’re getting four yards a pop in the running game, let’s keep doing that and let them be special. Whatever it takes to win the game is what I’m going to do. We’re going to be better.”

Williams pointed to “slow growth” for the offense and added that the Bears “do need to get it going more efficiently.” They have three offensive touchdowns going into their home game against the Rams on Sunday.

Williams completed 33 of 52 passes for 363 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for an 80.8 passer rating in the loss to the Colts on Sunday. He also lost a fumble.

It was the highest yardage total for a Bears quarterback since Bryan Hoyer in 2009, but it was inefficient. Of the 25 times in franchise history that someone threw for 350 yards or more, his passer rating was the fifth-lowest.
