Bears coach Matt Eberflus is weighing changes to his offense. Benching quarterback Caleb Williams is not one of them, Eberflus said Monday at Halas Hall.
“Caleb is our starter,” he said.
Sitting Williams would have been an extreme measure, but he’s struggled mightily in recent weeks. Williams went 16-for-30 for 120 yards and a 63.2 passer rating in Sunday’s low-point loss to the Patriots. He was sacked nine times — no Bears quarterback has been sacked more in one game, ever.
In the past three games, the Bears have averaged nine points. They’ve scored two touchdowns — both in the fourth quarter of the Commanders game that they lost on a Hail Mary.
The Bears drafted Williams, a former Heisman Trophy winner from USC, first overall in April. They surrounded him with veteran offensive players they hoped would ease his transition to the NFL — running back D’Andre Swift, tight end Gerald Everett and receivers Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze — but Williams’ rookie performance has swung from low to high and back to low again.
Tyson Bagent, the Bears’ second-stringer, has not thrown a pass this season.
