Bears Get Tough NFL Draft News as Trade Buzz Builds

The Chicago Bears’ pre-draft outlook just got a little more complicated, and it could end up reshaping their entire first-round strategy.

With weeks to go before the 2026 NFL Draft, two of the team’s most frequently projected targets, defensive tackles Peter Woods and Kayden McDonald, are drawing increasing skepticism around the league.

That uncertainty is starting to shift the conversation, especially when it comes to how general manager Ryan Poles might approach pick No. 25. If Chicago was banking on interior defensive line help early, the latest evaluations suggest they may need to rethink that plan or get creative with it.

Draft Stock Concerns Cloud Bears’ DT targets

For months, Woods and McDonald have been tied to Chicago as logical fits for a defense that struggled mightily against the run and failed to generate consistent interior pressure.

However, recent feedback from league insiders paints a different picture.

According to evaluations echoed by analysts like Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks, this year’s defensive tackle class lacks true first-round value. Most prospects are viewed as early-down run defenders rather than complete three-down disruptors.

That’s a concern for a Bears team that needs more than just space-eaters up front.

Woods’ inconsistency and underwhelming pre-draft process have pushed him closer to second-round territory. His quiet workout circuit and limited production have caused him to slide.

Meanwhile, McDonald’s elite run defense (highlighted by a standout PFF grade) has kept him in the conversation. However, his limited pass-rush upside continues to give teams pause.

Around the league, there’s a growing sense that neither player offers the kind of impact typically expected from a Round 1 pick.

Bears Trade-back Scenario Gaining Real Traction

That uncertainty could play directly into Chicago’s hands. This could force a different strategy for Poles and the Bears.

If the Bears believe both Woods and McDonald will still be available after the first round, moving back becomes a far more appealing option.

Sliding down a few spots, or even into the early second round, could allow Chicago to pick up additional draft capital while still landing one of their preferred targets.

It’s a classic value play, and one that aligns with how Poles has approached roster building in the past.

Rather than reaching for a player with question marks, the Bears could pivot, especially if higher-impact positions like edge rusher or offensive tackle present better value at No. 25.

But if the board falls a certain way and those options are off the table, don’t be surprised if Chicago trades back, stays patient, and still addresses the defensive interior on its own terms.
