Bears coach Matt Eberflus will not learn from what happened leading up to the blocked field goal that cost his team the game against the Packers on Sunday because he believes he handled it correctly.
Down 20-19, the Bears reached the Packers’ 30-yard line got a two-yard run by Roschon Johnson to the 28 with 28 seconds left, but rather than run another play, Eberflus let the clock go down to three seconds and called timeout.
“I wouldn’t mind one more run, assuming they take care of the ball,” Tom Brady said on the broadcast.
Cairo Santos’ 46-yard field goal was blocked by Packers defensive lineman Karl Brooks to seal the 20-19 victory.
Eberflus said Monday he was worried about not only a potential fumble if the Bears ran one more play, but possibly a holding penalty or false start that would’ve taken the Bears out of field-goal range.
He also said he “felt good” about their positioning on the field and would do everything the same in a future situation if it came up again.
“Yeah, I would do the same,” Eberflus said. “Would you like to be closer? Yeah, sure. You’d like it be at the 15-yard line. But it is where it is, and you could have done a bunch of different things there. You could have ran a pass. You could have ran an outside play. You could have ran another play that we punched there forward for two yards … and if that thing breaks for a couple more yards, it’s definitely a positive. But that’s where it is.”
