Avalanche stars Cale Makar, Nathan MacKinnon to appear with cartoons like Bugs Bunny, Steven Universe in MultiVersus NHL Face-Off

If you’ve ever wondered how Cale Makar’s slap shot compares to that of, say, Bugs Bunny, you may be in luck. Bugs and other characters from the “MultiVersus” video game will take the ice with the Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights in a special broadcast of their game on Sunday.

Officiated by the Tasmanian Devil, the MultiVersus NHL Face-Off will air at 1:30 p.m. Sunday on TruTV and on Max’s B/R Sports add-on. The event combines the NHL’s new EDGE tracking and Hawk-Eye Innovations optical tracking to re-create animated game action in real time, according to an NHL news release. The cartoons will play alongside avatars of Colorado stars Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar and Vegas players Jack Eichel and Jonathan Marchessault, among others. Steve Mears will call the game, with color commentary from Colby Armstrong.

“MultiVersus,” a new game from Warner Bros. Games and Player First Games, launches May 28 on PlayStation, Xbox and PC consoles. It features classic MultiVerse characters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Velma and Shaggy, plus more modern names like Steven Universe and Finn the Human, battling through different worlds.

The different realms — such as the court from “Space Jam” and Jake and Finn’s Treefort from “Adventure Time” — will be incorporated into the animated ice rink and its surroundings during the broadcast.

For fans who prefer a more traditional experience, the normal broadcast of Avalanche vs. Knights will be on TNT, with Kenny Albert, Eddie Olczyk and Brian Boucher on the call.
