Autopsy reveals man found dead in Oakland apartment March 4 died from gunshot wound

OAKLAND — An autopsy revealed that a 61-year-old man found dead in his North Oakland apartment March 4 died from a gunshot wound, authorities said Monday.

The man’s name has not yet been released pending notification of his family.

The man was found dead in a partially decomposed state about 8 p.m. March 4 inside his apartment in the 3700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way after police were asked to make a wellness check as he had not been seen for a few days. Authorities said the man lived alone in the apartment.

An autopsy the next day revealed the man had died from a gunshot wound to the torso, authorities said.

Police said it was estimated he had been dead between two and 10 days before he was found.

Investigators have not yet determined a motive for the killing, which became the 19th city’s homicide of the year. They did say there was no sign of a forced entry to the apartment and have not ruled out the possibility the man was killed by someone he knew.

No arrests have been made and no suspect information has been released.

The city’s homicide tally for the year is currently at 20. A 43-year-old man was fatally shot March 6 in East Oakland. Last year at this time police had investigated 14 homicides in the city.

Anyone with information about the killing is asked to call police at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950. Anyone with video or pictures related to the shooting may email them to cidvideos@oaklandca.gov..
