AUSD Notes: Several Alameda school projects ongoing over summer break

Schools are out, and Alameda Unified School District teachers and principals are on a well deserved break. That doesn’t mean the whole district is at rest, though. Summer is a busy, busy time for the AUSD as staff who work year-round wrap up this last school year and prepare for the next one.

What community members will first notice are the large number of facility projects across the district this summer, including continuing to build the temporary campus for Wood Middle School on the former Lum Elementary school site; demolishing the current Wood Middle site; and starting work on a new athletic field for Encinal Junior & Senior High School.

Other summer projects include excavating the pool at Alameda High School in preparation for building a new one; building fences at Encinal and Alameda High; initiating updates at Alameda High’s Kofman Auditorium; installing new HVAC and electrical systems for the Alameda Child Development Center and a new electrical system at Island High; installing a new furnace at Earhart Elementary; and putting new roofs on Ruby Bridges Elementary and both of Alameda High’s gymnasiums.

We’re aware these projects can cause some dust, noise and traffic congestion, and we appreciate the community’s patience and support as we continue to work to create better facilities and campuses for our students and staff. Our custodians will be hard at work doing deep floor-to-ceiling cleaning at our school sites.

Also, the school district’s Food and Nutrition Services staff are managing our free summer meals program every weekday at four locations: the Alameda Boys & Girls Club, Alameda Point Collaborative, the Academy of Alameda and Shinsei Garden Apartments. Breakfasts and lunches are free to all visitors ages 18 or younger. No application or ID is needed.

At the AUSD office, staff will continue working on some of the major initiatives launched this year, including developing a new Literacy Framework for our elementary school program; preparing for new math pathways at our high schools; and improving our grading policies and practices to make them more accurate and equitable. Our Human Resources staff is also busily hiring and onboarding new employees — we’ll have more information about some of our new hires in August!

We’ll highlight the work of our year-round employees this summer in a series of social media posts. Please look for them at AUSD pages on Facebook (facebook.com/AlamedaUnified), LinkedIn (linkedin.com/company/alameda-usd), X/Twitter (@AUSDNews) and Instagram (alamedaunified).
