AUSD Notes: How Alameda schools are ensuring campus safety

Over the last decade we’ve expanded our communications program so that people in the AUSD community and Alameda residents at large can easily find transparent and accurate information about the district’s staff, students and programs. One easy way to keep up with the AUSD is through the news stories we publish on our home page at alamedaunified.org online.

Those stories include community messages from AUSD Superintendent Pasquale Scuderi; spotlights on students, staff, and programs; upcoming deadlines (e.g. enrollment); and articles about innovative school or district-wide programs. You can find the same information (and more) in our bimonthly, multisection newsletters, which are available on our communications webpage at alamedaunified.org/departments/communications.

You also can follow us on social media, including Facebook (facebook.com/AlamedaUnified), X (formerly Twitter — AUSDNews), Instagram (alamedaunified) and LinkedIn (linkedin.com/company/alameda-usd). Those platforms provide short news pieces about upcoming events, fun activities on our campuses, profiles of students and staff and links to longer articles about weightier topics.

In the event of an emergency (such as a lockdown or fire at a school site), AUSD staff and families will get notifications by text, emails and possibly robocalls. The best way for the general public to get information about those kinds of incidents is to go to our social media channels and home page, where we will post regular updates about the status of the situation.

Another way to keep up with the AUSD is to follow our Board of Education meetings, which take place at 6:30 pm on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month in-person (at Alameda City Hall) and via Zoom. These meetings include presentations on a wide range of topics, including the AUSD’s budget, educational programs, bond program, curricula, student achievement, Strategic Plan and school site focus areas.

This week, for instance, the board meeting includes presentations on the Academy of Alameda’s petition to renew its charter, potential cooling strategies for AUSD’s classrooms, initiatives to help African-American students at Maya Lin School and an update on our early literacy programs.

We post the agenda to our website five days before the meeting (at alamedaunified.org and alameda.novusagenda.com/agendapublic) as well as to our social media channels. If you can’t attend or watch the live meeting, video of the meeting is posted several days later, and by going to the agenda you can select the segment or segments you want to watch.

We encourage our community to read our communications and follow our social media channels so they have access to timely and accurate communications about the school district!
