Atlanta Braves Make Roster Decision on 16-Year MLB Player After Nationals Game

The Atlanta Braves, in addition to bringing up one of their top prospects in JR Ritchie, will select to contract or Carlos ‘Cookie’ Carrasco.

On Wednesday, the Braves defeated the Washington Nationals 8-6, and are in the midst of a long stretch where they play on several straight days, so the team is making some roster moves to help suffice for the time being. Didier Fuentes was recalled before the game on Wednesday, but he will go back down to the minors after the recent moves.

Atlanta Braves Make Slew of Roster Moves

GettyVeteran right-hander Carlos Carrasco was reassigned to the minor leagues by the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.

Mark Bowman of MLB.com wrote after the Braves’ win on Wednesday, via a series of tweets:

“Ritchie will start tomorrow. Fuentes is being sent back down”

“Cookie Carrasco will come up to provide a long relief option in the pen tomorrow. Dylan Dodd is going on the IL with a back or oblique strain. And in case you missed it earlier, Fuentes is going down to make room for Ritchie to start tomorrow.”

Carlos Carrasco is a 16-year MLB veteran starter. He pitched 13.2 innings with the Braves last year in three starts, posting a 9.88 ERA and 15 earned runs.

His long relief might not be the best, but it will be a good fallback option if JR Ritchie isn’t able to go deep. However, as for the JR Ritchie news, it will be good to see one of the Braves’ top prospects get his big league shot.

JR Ritchie is set to make his major league debut on Wednesday against the Nationals. He has very strong Triple-A numbers.

In five starts with Gwinnett this season, JR Ritchie holds a 0.99 ERA in 27.1 innings. Over 16 total  at the AAA level, Ritchie has a 2.79 ERA in 87 total innings.

The Braves drafted Ritchie in the 1st round of the 2022 MLB Draft. He completely swept through the minors and now gets the chance to prove himself in MLB.

And as for the Carlos Carrasco news, his big league tenure could be very short-lived.
