At least one is dead after Arvada plane crash, officials say

At least one person is dead after a small plane crashed in an Arvada neighborhood on Friday morning, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

Two adults and two children traveling in the plane were taken to hospitals after the crash, Arvada Fire Protection District spokesperson Deanna Harrington said. On Monday, officials with the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said at least one of the people is dead. The official was not able to specify the name or age of the individual or the total number of fatalities.

The plane departed from Centennial Airport and began losing oil pressure and having engine trouble when the pilot decided to conduct an emergency landing, according to an air traffic recording posted on LiveATC.net.

“During the flight, the pilot communicated with local air traffic control the plane was experiencing engine issues and he planned to land at Rocky Mountain Airport,” said Sarah Sulick, a National Transportation Security Board spokesperson, in a statement emailed to the Denver Post. “For unknown reasons, the pilot did not land at the airport and instead attempted a forced landing onto a road.”

The pilot was halfway between downtown Denver and Standley Lake in Westminster when he began looking for a field or park to land in, according to the recording.

The plane slid down Oberon Road, near the Brentwood Street intersection, and collided with a red truck before landing on the front lawn of an Arvada home. It was on fire when Arvada Fire Protection District crews responded to the incident around 9:40 a.m. Friday. Officials do not yet know if the fire started before or after the crash.
