As two alleged gangsters face trial in Pleasant Hill double homicide, third suspect, ‘Gotti,’ is arrested

PLEASANT HILL — As two alleged gang members from Richmond are beginning to go before a jury on charges related to a double homicide, police here have arrested another suspected shooter.

Amir Shaw, a 20-year-old man allegedly known as “Gotti,” was booked into the Contra Costa jail system on Tuesday. He has been charged with murder in connection with the March 19, 2024 robbery and shootout that left a cannabis packaging deliveryman and one of the suspected robbers dead.

Shaw’s two alleged cohorts have been identified in court records as Money Green, 20, and Joe “Jojo” Washington Jr., 18. Both men were in a Martinez courtroom on Thursday, as they prepare for their upcoming jury trial.

Prosecutors allege that Washington, Green, Shaw, and a fourth man — 21-year-old Trejon Davis — tailed 63-year-old Peter Popovich as he made deliveries to various cannabis companies. Popovich delivered packaging materials, not marijuana, but the robbers apparently didn’t know that.

When Popovich arrived at his home near the Wood Creek Apartments in Pleasant Hill, the group — who’d been following him from Oakland — allegedly attempted to hold him up at gunpoint. Popovich was armed, and when he resisted there was a shootout, resulting in Davis and Popovich being shot and killed, authorities said.

Green and Shaw have both been identified as suspected shooters and face murder charges. Washington, the suspected driver, faces charges of conspiracy and robbery, court records show. All four suspects were affiliated with a Richmond gang that is based near Crescent Park, authorities said.

Shaw was arrested Tuesday in Richmond, according to a Pleasant Hill police news release.

During the robbery, the group allegedly blocked Popovich’s car in with a Dodge Charger that they stole from a man in San Pablo earlier in the day, according to the charging documents. After the robbery, the vehicle was found abandoned in Oakland, authorities said.

The three suspects were identified through a review of electronic data, including surveillance footage and text messages between them, according to court records. Green and Washington were arrested last year, together, near Washington’s aunt’s North Highlands home. Police searched the residence and found four firearms, several magazines and more than 100 rounds of ammunition, authorities said.
