Alabama football continues to build momentum on the recruiting trail as the Crimson Tide has been named a top-six school for elite 2027 running back Nigel Newkirk.
Hayes Fawcett of Rivals was the first to report the news on X that Newkirk had narrowed his list of schools down.
Joining the Crimson Tide inside Newkirk’s top 6 are some of the nation’s most elite programs, including LSU, USC, Miami, Michigan, and Ohio State. Newkirk’s list highlights the fact that he is one of the nation’s most coveted running back prospects.
Who is Nigel Newkirk?
Newkirk hails from Gainesville, Georgia, and is already emerging as one of the top running backs in the 2027 recruiting class. Listed at approximately 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, he possesses a nice blend of size and speed that sets him apart from other prospects.
Newkirk has earned the status of a nationally top 100-ranked prospect according to Rivals, and is also ranked inside the top 10 at the running back position.
Newkirk would be a nice addition to an Alabama class that currently has just three commitments in the early stages of this recruiting cycle.
Where Does Alabama Stand with Newkirk?
For Kalen DeBoer and the Alabama coaching staff, landing inside Newkirk’s top 6 is a good sign. Chad Simmons of Rivals reported a week ago that his sources were saying “Alabama is in the driver’s seat.”
Despite questions surrounding the program during the early stages of DeBoer’s tenure, Alabama has continued to make strong impressions with some of the nation’s top prospects. And recruiting in the state of Georgia hasn’t seemed to be a problem for this coaching staff as of late.
Alabama has also established a nice pipeline to Gainesville High School, signing two elite defensive prospects from the class of 2026 in Xavier Griffen and Jamarion Matthews. Continuing that pipeline would be a big win for the Alabama coaching staff.
Landing a player like Newkirk would further solidify the Crimson Tide’s future at the running back position, a year after signing the elite in-state talent Ezavier Crowell.
When Will Newkirk Make His Decision?
With Newkirk still early in his recruiting process, there is no immediate timeline for a decision. However, official visits, continued relationship-building, and on-field development will all play major roles in shaping his eventual commitment.
For now, Alabama has positioned itself firmly in the mix and appears to be in the best shape to land the talented back from the Peach State.
