Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack isn’t hiding what he believes the Crimson Tide needs to become a dominant defense.
As Alabama prepares for the 2026 season, one of the biggest areas of focus is the defensive line. The Crimson Tide has shown flashes defensively over the past two seasons, but Wommack acknowledged that Alabama has also been moved around at times up front.
That’s something the Crimson Tide is looking to change.
And according to Wommack, size and mass are a major part of the equation.

When asked about the importance of height, length and size along the defensive line, Wommack made it clear that having big, physical bodies up front matters.
“Well, usually height goes into length, right? In general, right, so you don’t have a lot of long guys with T Rex arms out there, right? So we’re probably guessing a little bit with some of that from overall length, but big bodies matter, right?”
Wommack then delivered one of the more memorable lines of fall camp.
“Mass kicks ass.”
For Alabama, the importance of that mass goes beyond simply looking the part.
Wommack explained that having defensive linemen with big frames and length allows them to strike offensive linemen, hold their ground and create problems when offenses attempt to double-team them.
“And so when you have big frames that have length and being able to strike people, but also when they’re getting a double team, right, just sheer mass matters.”
That’s particularly important in the SEC, where Alabama will routinely face some of the biggest and most physical offensive lines in college football.
Alabama Wants to Become More Dominant Up Front
The Crimson Tide’s defensive line has plenty of talented pieces, but Wommack knows talent alone isn’t enough.
Alabama has to be able to win the line of scrimmage consistently.
The defensive coordinator admitted that Alabama has been moved around at times over the past two seasons, something that has prevented the defense from becoming as dominant as it needs to be.
“And the truth is, we got moved around some for the last two years here, and so that was an area where, we’ve done some good things defensively here. At times, I think we’ve been really good.”
But Wommack believes Alabama is heading in the right direction.
“But to be a dominant defense, you have to have guys up front that can make a difference. And I think we get, we’re moving in the right direction.”
That’s an important development for Alabama heading into the 2026 season.
If the Crimson Tide can become more difficult to move at the point of attack, it could have a ripple effect throughout the entire defense. Bigger, longer defensive linemen who can occupy blockers and hold up against double teams can create more opportunities for Alabama’s linebackers and defensive backs to make plays.
For Wommack, it starts with the big guys.
Mass matters — and Alabama is hoping it can make a major difference in 2026.
