Alabama Basketball Suffers Massive Transfer Portal Loss

Nate Oats and the Alabama Crimson Tide suffered their second loss to the NCAA transfer portal on Monday.

Forward Aiden Sherrell is planning to enter the transfer portal, according to On3’s Joe Tipton. The move comes just days after Alabama saw Taylor Bol Bowen also enter the portal, signaling a potentially turbulent offseason in Tuscaloosa.

Aiden Sherrell Had Breakout Sophomore Season For Alabama

Sherrell is coming off an impressive sophomore season in Tuscaloosa, where he became Alabama’s most impactful post presence.

After coming off the bench as a freshman, Sherrell emerged as a full-time starter and one of Alabama’s most important frontcourt pieces. He started all 34 games he played and averaged 11. points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks.

His rim protection stood out nationally, ranking among the top shot blockers in college basketball while anchoring Alabama’s interior defense.

What’s Next for Aiden Sherrell?

Sherrell still has two more seasons of eligibility remaining, and the most common thought is that he will return to his home state to play for either the Michigan Wolverines or the Michigan State Spartans.

Whichever team ends up signing Sherrell will be getting one of the impactful post players in this transfer portal cycle.

How Losing Aiden Sherrell Impacts Alabama Basketball

There is no denying the massive impact this has on Coach Oats and Alabama. Without Sherrell, the Tide now lacks an experienced post presence.

Alabama is also losing two years of development they invested in Sherrell, who was a very raw prospect coming out of high school, despite being a McDonald’s All-American.

Now, Oats and his staff will have to work diligently in the transfer portal to try to find a suitable replacement for Sherrell.
