Adam Schefter Reveals ‘Pretty Cool’ Return Scenario for Aaron Rodgers, Steelers

One of the biggest remaining question marks surrounding any NFL team is the quarterback position for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The NFL Draft is just over a week away, and Aaron Rodgers is still a free agent. While there are plenty of people who expect Rodgers to return to Pittsburgh for another season, anything official remains to be seen.

While appearing on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday, ESPN senior insider Adam Schefter playfully illustrated an intriguing scenario that could showcase Rodgers’ return in a major way should he want to continue his storied NFL career. Could he officially return to the team during the NFL Draft?

Could Aaron Rodgers Join the Pittsburgh Steelers During the NFL Draft?

GettyAaron Rodgers went 10-6 as the team’s starter in 2025.

Here is the idea that Schefter introduced for how the Steelers could welcome back Rodgers should they choose to re-sign him:

“Maybe Aaron Rodgers walks out on the stage at the draft and announces he’s coming back…They play ‘Renegade’ and he comes walking out to announce the Steelers’ pick. That would be pretty cool.”

There aren’t many ways that could mark the return for Rodgers in a cooler way than that one. Especially at the start of a new era with Mike McCarthy taking over for former head coach Mike Tomlin, why not welcome back the future Hall of Fame signal-caller in style on draft night?

Both parties are cutting it a little close to midnight with the draft fast approaching and Pittsburgh lacking clarity under center. On the other hand, perhaps a deal has been reached behind the scenes and hasn’t been made public yet. The fans of Pittsburgh should know soon enough.

Aaron Rodgers Is the Steelers’ Best Option for 2026

There is little doubt that the Steelers can find a better option than bringing back Rodgers for another go-around. Simply put, the former Super Bowl MVP is one of the best players in NFL history. Arguably the greatest quarterback of all time, even at 42 years of age, Rodgers showed off his legendary status last season. While he wasn’t his 2011 self, he was still performing like a top 10 quarterback despite battling a fractured wrist.

He was one of nine NFL quarterbacks to throw at least 24 touchdowns and post a passer rating of at least 94.0. Without his impressive play, the Steelers likely wouldn’t have won the division for the first time in half a decade. His strong play helped mask what was a struggling team with an underperforming defense and suspect wide receiver core.

With his old coach, McCarthy, coming to town, the Steelers would be wise to bring him back. While he might not be the team’s long-term answer, his ability and brain power are both very evident still. Plus, new offensive weapons in Michael Pittman Jr. and Rico Dowdle could help take the offense to a new level in 2026. Time will tell whether or not Rodgers is back as a Steeler in the next week or so before the draft.
