Juan Macias messaged a stark reminder on ice safety Sunday.
He and two of his guys, Elido Cardenas and Daniel Aguirre, were entering the ice on Mineola Bay on Fox Lake when “A guy far away started screaming for help. He went through the ice.”
Macias always keeps a long rope with him on the ice, part of his being prepared.
“We ran and used it to help rescue him,” Macias messaged. “Thank God, everything ends good and the guy is safe with his family.
“This reminds me how not any ice is 100 percent safe and every time we have to pay attention.”
This is probably time for a reminder on the basics of ice safety: Treat any ice with respect. Use the buddy system. Carry a rope, spikes, a whistle and a flotation device.
Macais messaged that later Sunday they moved to Channel Lake and caught “fabulous crappies.”
