49ers Predicted to Trade for Bills WR During NFL Draft

The NFL Draft is just a couple of days away, and the San Francisco 49ers have six draft picks. While that is not a lot of picks, the franchise could acquire more talent via a trade. After presumably losing three wide receivers this offseason, could GM John Lynch and Co. make a trade for another pass-catcher?

Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay believes the Niners could be one of the teams that end up trading for a veteran wide receiver. In fact, he is predicting that they will trade for Buffalo Bills wide receiver Keon Coleman.

The San Francisco 49ers Need One More Wide Receiver

GettyWR Keon Coleman was drafted by the Bills in the second round out of Florida State in 2024.

Here is what Kay wrote about the idea of a potential Coleman-to-San Francisco trade during the draft:

“There’s a real possibility that the 2024 second-rounder could be on the move ahead of his third NFL season. If Coleman is available, the San Francisco 49ers should come calling…San Francisco would be wise to add an insurance and developmental option to the mix.”

Coleman’s future in Buffalo could very well be up in the air after Bills owner Terry Pegula essentially stated earlier this offseason that Coleman was former head coach Sean McDermott’s draft pick and not the front office’s. After struggling to find playing time a season ago, his days in Western New York could be numbered.

On the 49ers’ side of things, they made major moves in the wide receiver room earlier this offseason by signing both future Hall of Famer Mike Evans and former 1,000-yard receiver Christian Kirk. However, with veterans Kendrick Bourne, Brandon Aiyuk, and Jauan Jennings all either on new teams or expected to be on new teams, the 49ers’ losses outweigh their gains. If San Francisco could add one more pass-catcher to this core, the position group would be complete.

Keon Coleman Is the Answer for the 49ers

GettyKeon Coleman was an all-conference receiver at both Michigan State and Florida State before being drafted by Buffalo.

While Coleman hasn’t necessarily turned himself into an All-Pro wide receiver catching passes from MVP quarterback Josh Allen, he has proven that he could be a quality role player in the right situation. In San Francisco, he would likely be the fourth or fifth wide receiver on the depth chart. With Evans, Kirk, Ricky Pearsall, and Demarcus Robinson already there, Coleman wouldn’t be getting all of the snaps. Still, for the 49ers, that would be okay.

As a rookie in 2024, he started 12 of the 13 games that he played in and caught 29 passes for 556 yards and four touchdowns. His mark of 19.2 yards per catch was one of the best in the league. As an NFL sophomore last season, he caught 38 passes for 404 yards and four touchdowns.

After Pegula’s very revealing comments earlier this offseason, Coleman might be on a new team soon enough. With a potential need at wide receiver, could the Niners truly make the move to trade for Coleman? Time will tell.
