3 men charged with attempted murder in Aurora “rolling gunfight,” shootings across metro Denver

Three men linked to a July “rolling gunfight” in Aurora and two other metro Denver shootings have been charged with 12 felonies, including attempted murder, according to court records.

Aurora officials said 23-year-old Jose Daniel Gimenez-Chacin, 29-year-old Alonzo Lara and 29-year-old Yilbert Fransua Maldonado-Moncada were each charged with six counts of attempted first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree assault and one count of first-degree assault — all felonies — in Arapahoe District Court.

Around 11:45 p.m. on July 28, security footage shows a black Land Rover SUV and a white Ford F150 pickup truck traveling down South Havana Street, with the passengers shooting at each other, the Aurora Police Department said in a Tuesday news release.

An Aurora police car near Havana and East Idaho Place, a pedestrian in the 1500 block of Havana and four other victims were caught in the crossfire, investigators said.

Forensic analysis of the shell casings from the Aurora police car and pedestrian shootings linked the three suspects to another shooting in Aurora earlier that day and a third shooting in Denver several hours later, police said in the release.

Police said Gimenez-Chacin, Lara and Maldonado-Moncada are believed to be the driver and two passengers of the Land Rover involved in the July gunfight.

Gimenez-Chacin and Lara were arrested and charged in October, according to court records. Aurora investigators said Maldonado-Moncada was in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody at that time and made his first court appearance for the July 28 shooting last Thursday.

Gimenez-Chacin is being held on a $750,000 bond, but his next court date was not available. Lara is being held on $500,000 bond and is next scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 26, 2025. Maldonado-Moncada is being held on a $250,000 bond and is expected to appear in court on Jan. 30, 2025, for a preliminary hearing, according to court records.
