2026 FIFA World Cup: Iran Making Strong Push to Avoid USA

The 2026 FIFA World Cup promises to be one of the world’s premier sporting events once again. This edition will be split between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The first North American tourney will feature one potentially controversial participant: Iran.

The political backdrop surrounding the United States’ military action in the Middle East has put the Iranian Side on the spot. The political situation prompted Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali to declare that it is “not possible” for Iran to compete in the world’s most anticipated soccer event, ESPN reported.

FIFA, for its part, met the statement with justifiable concern. Iran’s withdrawal at this late stage in the run-up to the tournament makes it nearly impossible to adjust the field or schedule. If anything, replacing Iran with another national side might be a possibility.

However, news broke on Tuesday that Iran has lobbied to play in Mexico as part of their group-round fixtures in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. As it stands, Iran will play two matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle. That situation makes Iranian participation doubtful, as the Trump administration has made it clear that Iranian player safety could be in jeopardy if they travel to the United States.

As such, the Iranian Football Federation petitioned FIFA to move their matches to Mexico, Qatari outlet Al Jazeera reported. The request, unfortunately, has not made much headway.

FIFA Nixes Iran’s Request to Play in Mexico

Meanwhile, FIFA spared little time to nix Iran’s request to play in Mexico. The rationale behind the decision to keep Iran’s 2026 FIFA World Cup matches in the United States cited logistical issues. As The Guardian reported, soccer’s global governing body underscored that moving Iran’s fixtures to Mexico would inconvenience other nations.

Moreover, the logistical complications would include affecting broadcasting rights and schedules, plus impacting ticket sales. Fans have already purchased tickets for the games at the venues in which Iran will play.

That said, the 2026 FIFA World Cup does not anticipate any negative influences on the tourney’s organization. That’s why Iran’s participation is now more questionable than ever. As The Guardian noted, FIFA officials will meet on April 30 in Vancouver. It could be at that point when a final verdict comes down.

Iran Could Face United States in 2026 FIFA World Cup

As it stands, Iran will face Egypt, New Zealand, and Belgium during the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. If Iran can get past the group stage, it could set up a showdown with the United States.

The way the tournament bracket plays out, the runner-up in Group D will meet the runner-up of Group G. The United States is in Group D, with Iran in Group G. That situation means that, if both the United States and Iran finish as the runners-up in their respective groups, they would meet in Arlington, Texas, on July 3 in their Round of 32 matchup.

Needless to say, such a matchup would provide plenty of drama for soccer fans. While it would certainly be one of the most-watched showdowns, the politics would, sadly, overshadow the action on the pitch.
