One person was hospitalized Monday night in a fire at an abandoned gas station in Lakewood where roughly two dozen people were living, fire officials said.
West Metro Fire Rescue crews responded to the fire in an empty gas station on West Alameda Avenue, near South Harlan Street, around 10:35 p.m. Monday, according to Pulsepoint emergency records.
Fire officials said people who called 911 reported smoke and flames coming from the building, which was being used as a shelter by up to two dozen people.
The fire was extinguished just before 1 a.m., but crews and investigators stayed on scene until roughly 2:30 a.m., when the scene was cleared, fire officials said.
Fire officials said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it left “extensive” damage behind.
