1 dead, toddler injured in Jefferson County crash on eastbound I-70

At least one person died in a Thursday morning crash in Wheat Ridge that sent a toddler to the hospital and shut down eastbound Interstate 70, police said.

As of 7:15 a.m., eastbound I-70 was closed between Colorado 72, also known as Ward Road, and 32nd Avenue in Wheat Ridge, according to the police department. Colorado Department of Transportation cameras showed heavy, backed-up traffic for at least a mile in the area of the crash.

The two-car crash happened at about 5:15 a.m. Thursday, the Wheat Ridge Police Department said in a statement on X.

Police said one person died at the scene and paramedics took a toddler to the hospital. Another person was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and may have been driving on the wrong side of the interstate, police said.

Drivers should expect delays in the area and take alternate routes where possible.

An estimated time of reopening was not available Thursday morning and police said eastbound I-70 would be “shut down for some time” for the crash cleanup and investigation.
