1 dead, 3 hurt when Metra Electric train crashes into SUV in South Chicago overnight

One person was killed and three others were injured when a Metra Electric train slammed into an SUV early Wednesday in South Chicago on the South Side.

The equipment train was going north on the South Chicago branch when it hit the SUV around 12:30 a.m., on 87th Street near Baltimore Avenue, Metra said.

One unidentified person was dead at the scene, Metra officials said. Two occupants of the vehicle were taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and another was taken to Trinity Hospital. Their conditions weren’t immediately known.

The crossing gates were working at the time of the crash, which was under investigation by Metra.
