NCIS: Sydney premiered in the fall of 2023 on CBS. Though the show was created for Australian TV, it snagged a primetime slot in the U.S. thanks to the writers’ and actors’ strikes, which created a need for new programming.

Season one of NCIS: Sydney wrapped up in early 2024. In March, CBS confirmed it would bring the show back for a second season.

“The global power of the NCIS franchise became even stronger on broadcast and streaming with the addition of NCIS: Sydney,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “Our American viewers have fully embraced these engaging characters, unique stories and the fabulous Australian scenery. We are thrilled to bring this show back to CBS next season and spend even more time down under.”

‘NCIS: Sydney’ returns to CBS midseason

While CBS has renewed NCIS: Sydney, the show isn’t part of the network’s fall 2024 schedule. Instead, the show will return midseason, following the conclusion of Blue Bloods Season 14.

After the Blue Bloods series finale airs, NCIS: Sydney will take over that show’s Friday night timeslot, with new episodes airing at 8 p.m. ET, ahead of Fire Country and S.W.A.T. A premiere date has not yet been announced.

NCIS: Sydney follows a team of American NCIS agents and officers from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) who are part of a multi-national task force charged with keeping naval crimes in check in a hotly contested patch of ocean.

In the season 1 finale, JD’s (Todd Lasance) son Jack was kidnapped by a birthday party clown. He used the child as leverage to get JD to agree to a prisoner swap, trading mysterious spy Ana (Georgina Haig) for his little boy. During the exchange, Ana killed the kidnapper and escaped, leaving JD and his son alive. But before she vanished, she gave JD the kidnapper’s phone, suggesting he use it to “phone a friend.” When JD dialed the number on the phone, it seemed that it was calling Department of Defense official Rankin (Lewis Fitz-Gerald), suggesting that he might have been behind the kidnapping plot – and implying there was a much deeper conspiracy afoot.

Lasance says he’s looking forward to teasing out the implications of that big reveal in future episodes.

“What’s incredible about this [reveal] is it is endless as to where they could take it,” he told <a href=”https://tvline.com/interviews/ncis-sydney-finale-explained-colonel-rankin-kidnapped-jd-son-1235137148/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>TVLine. “That is the way to finish a [season].”

“What I love is that [Rankin] is such an intrinsic part of the organization and controls a lot of our activities,” he added. “So to have that person be part of, potentially, our biggest threat and the biggest enemy introduced in the whole series — and she has escaped, as well! — it’s like, where they can go with this is phenomenal.”

NCIS: Sydney Season 1 is streaming on Paramount+.
