Some stars have contradictory emotions about their own music. Tiffany said “I Think We’re Alone Now” sometimes makes life “hard” for her. Despite this, she committed to keep on singing it for one reason.

“I Think We’re Alone Now” was originally a bubblegum pop song by Tommy James and the Shondells from 1967. When 1960s bubblegum was back in style during the late 1980s, Tiffany remade “I Think We’re Alone Now” as a dance-pop track. Her cover is more famous than the original at this point.

During a 2017 interview with <a href=”https://www.songfacts.com/blog/interviews/tiffany” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>SongFacts, Tiffany said she loves “I Think We’re Alone Now.” Still, she has mixed feelings about its place in her career. “Sometimes it’s hard because people only think of me as ‘I Think We’re Alone Now,’ and they don’t know the other hits and that I’ve been in the industry for almost 30 years now and have grown and there’s other music out there that may have not been chart-topping but has actually made its way on to the radio and been critically acclaimed,” she said. “But a lot of times, in America, especially, we think if it’s not on the radio, then it fell off the face of the earth.”

Tiffany said she’s reinterpreted her signature song in numerous ways. “I’ve done ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ in a lot of different ways: kind of acoustic, stripped down, we’ve done it ska over the years, we’ve done it more rock,” she said. “It’s such a well-written song, and more than anything, there’s something about it that makes people feel good, which makes me feel good. I just have to go, [sings] ‘Children behave,’ and people go, ‘Yeah!’ and I’m like: ‘Yay, this is going to be a winner.’”

Tiffany said she always performs “I Think We’re Alone Now” because she doesn’t want to let her fans down. In her opinion, it’s disappointing when stars refuse to perform their big hits. Other songs that she always includes in her sets are “Could’ve Been,” “All This Time,” and her cover of The Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There,” which she retitled “I Saw Him Standing There.”

Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now” was her biggest hit. It topped the <a href=”https://www.billboard.com/artist/tiffany/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and lasted on the chart for 24 weeks in total. The tune appeared on the album Tiffany. That record reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for two weeks and remained on the chart for 69 weeks. Tiffany’s self-titled album remains her most popular record in the United States.

Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now” is still huge. It’s a staple on 1980s nostalgia stations. The tune appeared in Seth MacFarlane’s comedy Ted. The music video also had a clear influence on the joke song “Let’s Go to the Mall” from How I Met Your Mother. Whenever people think of 1980s teen pop, Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now” will always come to mind. She and Debbie Gibson arguably paved the way for the teen pop revolution of the late 1990s.

Tiffany has some mixed feelings about “I Think We’re Alone Now” — but she still thinks it’s a great song.
