There’s a lot going on in The Night Agent Season 2 which muddies the romantic waters. So, what does that mean for Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) and his love interest Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan)? Their “romantic chemistry” is still there. But there’s also the past—ahem, the first season of the Netflix original series— to deal with and new questions to answer.

Rose tries returning to the life she had before Peter in ‘The Night Agent’ Season 2

Speaking to <a href=”https://www.tvinsider.com/1170149/the-night-agent-season-2-netflix-gabriel-basso-preview-exclusive/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>TV Insider, Buchanan opened up about where her character is in her life as the new installment gets underway. While Peter’s trying his hand at being a Night Agent, Rose is no longer heading up a company as CEO. Now she’s the lead programmer at AdVerse, a company applying surveillance technology to advertising.

Outside of work, Rose is in therapy for PTSD. But, as Buchanan told the outlet, “She’s a bit of a bad patient. She’s not opening up.” Getting back to her old life isn’t going well. “She’s faking it,” Buchanan said.

What’s “paramount” for her character in The Night Agent Season 2 is that Rose isn’t “the same person. She’s trying so hard to get back to that person who was confident and owned a room, could do a TED Talk, could be a leader of a business” in an active way that isn’t “just sitting in a room.”

Peter’s not sure about getting involved with Rose in ‘The Night Agent’ Season 2

While Rose tries to get her old life back, Peter is reluctant to get close. Why? As Basso explained, it all goes back to Peter’s job and the additional level of risk involved.

“If you’re going to involve someone you care about in that decision, I think there is a certain amount of responsibility that you have to assume for them,” the actor said. “And I don’t think he wants to put her in danger or is willing to assume that responsibility. He’s a little hesitant.”

“There are definitely feelings there,” Buchanan added. “But Peter is not willing to show any sort of emotion.” Meanwhile, their “romantic chemistry” is still there along with their “operational chemistry.”

It helps that Rose “knows the way he thinks and approaches situations.” But she also sees Peter’s “not the same person.” He’s “still in there” but “so caught up with the job” in The Night Agent Season 2. “That’s all he can see and that’s all he’s focused on” while Rose acts as his “moral compass.”

Basso and Buchanan ‘fell back’ into Peter and Rose’s ‘dynamic’ filming the new season

Although three years had passed since filming The Night Agent Season 1, Basso and Buchanan returned to their characters almost reflexively. “We just fell back into Rose and Peter’s dynamic,” Basso said. “We knew how our characters would act.”

As for how audiences responded to the relationship in season 1, Basso shared that it didn’t impact how he and Buchanan performed together in season 2.

“I think that we tried to remain consistent and unaware that Peter and Rose’s relationship were popular things about Season 1,” he said. “You never want to interpret what’s happening as this was popular in Season 1, let’s cater to fans this way. It should remain logically consistent, especially for it to be believable.”

The Night Agent Season 2 premieres Jan. 23, 2025, on Netflix.
