Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre recently collaborated on Snoop’s twentieth studio album, Missionary. Snoop said he felt grateful that Dr. Dre worked with him, as he believes the producer is at the top of his game. Still, he joked that Dr. Dre was pulling him backward in one way. He said the album’s title was all Dr. Dre’s idea.

Dr. Dre has produced an album called Doggystyle for Snoop and, more recently, the album Missionary. Snoop said these titles were all Dr. Dre’s idea.

“He named both albums. He’s the credit,” Snoop told <a target=”_blank” href=”https://www.complex.com/music/a/jillian-hardeman-webb/still-dr-dre-snoop-dogg-complex-cover” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Complex. “Give this motherf***er with his nasty a**. I’m all grown and s*** and you going to pull me right back.”

Dr. Dre explained why he picked the album titles.

“I think it’s f***ing fun and funny as s***,” he said. “We’re just having fun and being creative. That’s what this whole s*** is about. That’s just being in the studio together.”

Snoop joked that he had other ideas for the album’s name.

“I was going to call it ‘Cowgirl,’ but he didn’t really want that,” he said. “No, I’m f***ing with you. That’s not true.”

They said working on ‘Missionary’ felt different than ‘Doggystyle’

Snoop and Dr. Dre have worked together in the past, and the former said he was thrilled to team up with the producer again. He appreciated what Dr. Dre was able to bring to the production.

“This is him on the top of his game producing for me,” Snoop said. “Not making a beat for me, but producing the whole song, every element of the song from how I say it to what I say to the way I say it, to the coming back in doing ad-libs, to making sure that it sounds right. Like your projection of your vocals, listening to every f***ing word. ‘No, you got to come back and say this word like this because your energy wasn’t right.’”

He said he felt Dr. Dre pushed him further than he was used to on the new album.

“And when we listened to it back, I f***ing love it because it challenged me and it put me in a position of where I’ve never been,” he said. “People work with me and be like, ‘Oh, that s*** was dope.’ This n**** be like, ‘Nope, do it again. Do it again until it’s perfection.’”

Dr. Dre said the process was markedly different from 1993’s Doggystyle, as he was still a young producer.

“I feel like the first time we worked together on Doggystyle, I was still green,” he said, adding, “I was still learning the SSL mixing board and still learning how the musicality of everything was going. I was still learning. So I got it now. I always say, nobody’s ever mad at humility. I’m better now. I’m so much better than I was when we did Doggystyle. People are going to understand that when they hear the music.”

Snoop said it nearly came as a relief to work with Dr. Dre again.

“I can do a lot by myself, but when I’m with you it’s like I can be Robin and let you be Batman,” Snoop said. “You know what I’m saying? I can kick back.”

Dr. Dre said he and Snoop had strong chemistry in the studio.

“Everybody loves it when we’re together,” he said. “There’s a certain synergy that comes together when we get on stage or when we get in the studio together. It’s just some kind of magic that happens. I realized this when we were working on ‘Nuthin’ but a “G” Thang’ and it was this one part that came in when I realized how much our vocals work together. And I’m like, oh s***, this is like a synergy or something that is really f***ing special. So I just ran with it from there.”
