In 2024, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre collaborated on new music. They worked together on Snoop’s debut album Doggystyle, in 1993, and reunited for Missionary. Snoop said that with the new album, he hoped to fill a void. He didn’t mean an emotional one. He believed there was an emptiness when Dr. Dre wasn’t making music.

Thirty years after Doggystyle, Snoop and Dr. Dre reunited for Missionary. Snoop shared why he felt it was the right time for the collaboration.

“We still in our prime,” he told <a href=”https://www.complex.com/music/a/jillian-hardeman-webb/still-dr-dre-snoop-dogg-complex-cover” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Complex, adding, “We still good at what we do and we just felt like we always fill the void when we make music. We trying to put back the sound that we created under his direction and that’s what we’re doing.”

He believed there was a void left behind by Dr. Dre.

“That void is Dr. Dre’s sound,” he explained. “When Dr. Dre makes music, his music don’t sound like nobody else’s music. And it’s a uniqueness about his sound that me and him make together and I’m just honored to still be able to do it at a high level and for him to be able to produce me.”

Dr. Dre spoke about making music with Snoop Dogg

Dr. Dre said another major factor that led to the creation of Missionary was timing. It took three decades, but they were finally able to set aside time to work together.

“It’s also all about timing,” he said. “For some reason it just clicked for now.”

He said he felt he and Snoop were a good pair in the studio.

“I’m doing some amazing music right now. And Snoop, he stays on his grind,” he said. “Everybody knows what it is with his energy and his commitment and his work ethic and everything.

They said working together on ‘Missionary’ felt different for them

According to Dr. Dre, their work on Missionary felt different than past collaborations.

“Also this is a different way of working, to be honest with you,” he said. “I think it took maybe 20 years for Snoop to allow me to work with him this way. And the way we produced the record and the way we did the writing and the music and the whole nine is a different way of us working. And I think the audience is going to really get another taste for the next saga of what we’re doing. Especially making hip-hop records at this age, and it’s the shit. So yeah, you’re going to get another dose of us that I think is going to be really impressive.”

Snoop explained that on Doggystyle, they were still learning to work together. They didn’t have to overcome this obstacle on Missionary.

“This is him on the top of his game producing for me,” he said. “Not making a beat for me, but producing the whole song, every element of the song from how I say it to what I say to the way I say it, to the coming back in doing ad-libs, to making sure that it sounds right. Like your projection of your vocals, listening to every f***ing word. ‘No, you got to come back and say this word like this because your energy wasn’t right.’ And when we listened to it back, I f***ing love it because it challenged me and it put me in a position of where I’ve never been.”
