The rapper landed in the hole after getting into an altercation with a fellow prisoner at FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey, TMZ reported Friday. The man apparently “dissed” Diddy, which led to a brawl. Prison guards separated the two men, and Combs was sent to solitary.

As of now, it’s not clear if Diddy is still in solitary confinement. Federal prison officials do not disclose specific information about inmates in custody.

The practice of locking up prisoners in isolated cells with minimal human contact has drawn widespread criticism from prison reform advocates. Federal inmates placed in restrictive housing typically spend at least 22 hours a day completely separated from both other prisoners and prison guards, noted a 2024 report from the <a href=”https://www.gao.gov/blog/federal-prisons-havent-addressed-longstanding-concerns-about-overuse-solitary-confinement” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Government Accountability Office. They may be let out of their cells for brief periods of exercise. But even that limited activity takes place independent of other people. In their cells, they have little or nothing to do, notes <a href=”https://solitarywatch.org/facts/faq/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Solitary Watch, a nonprofit newsroom drawing attention to prison conditions and the use of solitary confinement.

Inmates in solitary “live lives of enforced idleness,” according to the organization. “They are often denied the opportunity to work or attend prison programming, and are sometimes banned from having radios, art supplies, and even reading materials in their cells.”

Solitary confinement is widely used in the U.S. More than six percent of the U.S. prison population is locked up alone on any given day, a Solitary Watch analysis found. Inmates in solitary are disproportionally likely to be Black, the GAO noted.

The use of solitary confinement has been condemned by many, especially for extended periods of time. In 2020, a <a href=”https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2020/02/united-states-prolonged-solitary-confinement-amounts-psychological-torture” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>United Nations expert singled out the practice in the United States, describing it as a “deliberate infliction of severe mental pain or suffering [that] may well amount to psychological torture.”

The length of Combs’ stay in solitary isn’t clear. However, the fight that triggered his move could affect his release date. The Bad Boy Records founder is currently scheduled for released in February 2028. But running afoul of prison rules could change that timeline.

In October 2025, Combs was sentenced for 50 months in federal prison after being convicted in a high-profile trial of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. He was found not guilty on several more serious charges, including racketeering and sex trafficking.
