Quentin Tarantino Revealed the Year Movies Died

Quentin Tarantino knows more about movies than just about anyone else alive. The Pulp Fiction director said cinema ended a few years ago. He made some salient points, even if they were not literally true.

Quentin Tarantino said movies were bad in the late 1990s but they’ve gotten worse

During a 2025 interview with <a href=”https://variety.com/2025/film/news/quentin-tarantino-direct-final-movie-no-hurry-1236288002/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Variety, Tarantino discussed his plan to write a play. He said that if the play became a hit, he would likely turn it into his next and final movie, but if it were a disaster, he would likely abandon any plans for a film adaptation. “That’s a big f****** deal pulling [a play] off, and I don’t know if I can,” he said. “So here we go. That’s a challenge, a genuine challenge, but making movies? Well, what the f*** is a movie now?

“What — something that plays in theaters for a token release for four f****** weeks?” he added. “All right, and by the second week you can watch it on television. I didn’t get into all this for diminishing returns. I mean, it was bad enough in ’97. It was bad enough in 2019, and that was the last f****** year of movies.”

The ‘Reservoir Dogs’ director is right and wrong about movies

Is Tarantino right? Well, on a literal level, no. Movies aren’t going anywhere. People are going to be watching and making movies generations from now. Humans will likely be making movies after we’ve left the Earth and colonized Mars. After humanity destroys itself, extraterrestrial species will learn from us and make their own movies. Maybe they’ll finally make a good remake of a classic Disney cartoon.

However, the theatrical experience appears to be dying. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic forced millions to stay home and watch movies on streaming. Since then, many fans don’t feel like going to the theater is necessary for them to enjoy a new film. They’d rather stay home and watch it for free on a streaming service. Even streaming services that require a paid subscription are usually more economical than going to the cinema.

For that reason, it’s a safe bet to say that the theatrical experience is on its way out. That’s a real shame, as movies are generally better when you see them on a big screen as opposed to a television screen. Tarantino knows this, as he’s made movies like Kill Bill, Django Unchained, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood that are clearly meant to be viewed on the big screen so that moviegoers can see all the visual detail in every shot. Furthermore, the popcorn you make at home just doesn’t taste the same as delicious, caloric movie theater popcorn.

Quentin Tarantino says the theatrical release is ‘a show pony exercise’

Tarantino hates the idea that movies aren’t getting enough time in theatrical release. “That was a s*** deal, as far as I was concerned, the fact that it’s gotten drastically worse?” Tarantino said. “And that it’s just it’s a show pony exercise. Now the theatrical release, you know, and then like yeah, in two weeks, you can watch it on this [streamer] and that one. OK. Theater? You can’t do that. It’s the final frontier.”

Tarantino is correct — and it’s hard to imagine Hollywood embracing the theatrical experience again.
