Queen Elizabeth‘s extensive wardrobe was an important part of her public persona. From brightly colored suits to dozens of handbags and shoes, the late monarch had an outfit for every occasion. There was only one way to store it all. That was on an entire floor of Buckingham Palace instead of a closet.

It took a whole floor, not a closet, to store all of Queen Elizabeth’s clothing

Queen Elizabeth didn’t confine her extensive wardrobe to a large walk-in closet. Rather, she had an <a href=”https://www.popsugar.com/fashion/how-does-queen-elizabeth-pick-her-outfits-46404683″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>entire floor dedicated to years of royal fashion.

The queen and her husband, Prince Philip, had private apartments on the north side of Buckingham Palace. The top floor was dedicated to storing her clothes.

However, the queen never actually went upstairs to pick out her outfit for the day. She had a member of her staff take care of it for her.

Paul Burrell told Yahoo UK’s <a href=”https://uk.style.yahoo.com/kate-thornton-presents-yahoo-uks-new-video-series-royal-box-152715457.html?guccounter=1″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>The Royal Box that the queen’s outfits were brought down to her every day. The monarch typically had two choices.

“Her dresser will bring down two outfits in the morning, which are sketched with pieces of material clipped to them so that the Queen can remember whether it’s silk or cotton or wool,” Burrell explained. “The one the Queen picks is the one which is brought downstairs from up above. So she doesn’t see her wardrobe with clothes in it.”

Queen Elizabeth stuck to one particular clothing style

Throughout her royal career, Queen Elizabeth traditionally stuck to one particular clothing style. The monarch favored brightly colored suits for daily wear as a royal rule.

However, there was a reason for this type of dressing. The queen’s senior dresser, Angela Kelly, wrote in the book The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe that there was a reason the queen stuck to brightly colored outfits.

“Color is key — the color chosen must suit the Queen and the occasion,” Kelly wrote. “Vibrant colors work well in the daytime. Thus, these allowed her to stand out from the crowd and be visible to the well-wishers who came to see her.”

“If it is raining, she used one of the many transparent umbrellas she has. It ensures that, even in the wettest conditions, she remained as visible as possible,” Kelly wrote.

Kelly concluded, “When Her Majesty visited a school or a children’s center, she was always dressed in a bright, jolly color, and her hat had the kind of details that appealed to children — feathers, twirls, twists, flowers, and ribbons. “When she visited a nursing or residential home for older people, she preferred to wear a strong, well-defined color, with a structured hat, to help those who are visually impaired to see her.”

Little is known currently about Queen Elizabeth’s clothing collection. However, <a href=”https://nypost.com/2022/09/23/who-inherits-queen-elizabeths-clothes-jewels-after-her-death/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>The New York Post reported that her wardrobe was likely to be split between Kate Middleton and Queen Consort Camilla.

The outlet quoted royal expert Ingrid Seward, who claimed Kate would get the first pick of Elizabeth’s clothing and jewels. Camilla would subsequently get second choice.

The remaining items are likely to be preserved for the royal collection, such as Elizabeth’s most historical pieces such as her coronation outfit and wedding gown. Thus, these items are likely preserved as items of royal significance.

Queen Elizabeth died on Sept. 8, 2022, at the age of 96. Her death certificate recorded her cause of death as old age.
