London calling. Not for Kate Middleton and Prince William. The Prince and Princess of Wales will never move back to England’s capital city, according to a royal commentator. Even when they become king and queen.

There’s no ‘time’ where William and Kate will move back to London

Roya Nikkhah, the Royal Editor of the U.K.’s Sunday Times, shared her belief that William and Kate are very much done with living in London on 60 Minutes Australia.

“I don’t see a time where they move permanently back into London,” Nikkhah said (via <a href=”https://www.express.co.uk/news/royal/2018546/six-bombshells-documentary-prince-william” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Express). However, that doesn’t mean William and Kate will never be in England’s capital city. “Their private office will be in London,” she continued, noting “You don’t need to move back in to keep the flow of monarchy going.”

But what about when William takes the throne? That’s not likely to change his and Kate’s living situation, at least not enough to bring them back to London. “Of course, the pressures on William and Catherine when they’re King and Queen will be bigger,” Nikkhah said. “But I still don’t think that the institution for William and Kate will come before family.”

That means no Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis running around Buckingham Palace when their parents eventually lead the royal family. Maybe there will be a photo-op? Or event here and there? But no big Wales family move.

Currently, William’s father, King Charles III, and Queen Camilla don’t live at Buckingham Palace. Their primary home is Clarence House, also located in London. They won’t reportedly relocate to the palace until extensive renovations are completed in 2027 (via <a href=”https://www.hellomagazine.com/homes/738288/king-charles-wont-move-into-buckingham-palace-2025/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Hello!).

William and Kate are no strangers to London living. They, along with George, Charlotte, and Louis, spent years living at Kensington Palace’s Apartment 1A. (Details on where they live now, ahead.)

Although referred to as an “Apartment,” the property, which remains William and Kate’s London residence, is more like a mansion. It has a whopping 20 rooms across four stories. What Apartment 1A lacks, however, is privacy which reportedly contributed to William and Kate eventually relocating.

“The reality is they are quite confined in what they can do in London,” a friend of the couple’s previously told <a href=”https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/prince-william-to-move-family-to-the-shires-after-his-40th-birthday-p2m3dbkn3″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>The Times. “The kids can’t go into the park and kick a football with friends.” Prince Harry is said to have even likened Kensington Palace to a prison.

William and Kate moved to Adelaide Cottage in the summer of 2022

The future king and queen—and their kids—haven’t called London home since 2022 when they traded the city for Windsor, England. William and Kate moved to Adelaide Cottage, a modest home by royal standards, with four bedrooms and no room for live-in staff.

Originally built in 1831 for Queen Adelaide, the “cottage” is a “grace and favor” home maintained by the Crown Estate and rent-free. In contrast to Apartment 1A, Adelaide Cottage is located in Home Park, a private park owned by the Crown Estate. Royal watchers might recognize it as the location of the Duke of Sussex’s former U.K. home, Frogmore Cottage.

The late Queen Elizabeth II played a part in William and Kate’s move, royal author Robert Jobson claimed in his 2024 book, Catherine, the Princess of Wales: A Biography of the Future Queen.

“Catherine understood that for William, as a future king, it was important for him to be geographically closer to the late Queen in her final months, when he was required to support both her and his father,” Jobson wrote in a Daily Mail excerpt.

Ultimately, the Wales family’s move to be closer to the queen, who resided at Windsor Castle, “made a real difference” for William and his grandmother. “They were in regular contact, seeing each other in person and speaking on the phone several times a week, bringing them even closer.”
