Alice Hufnagle, a beloved matriarch of her suburban Philadelphia family, was found murdered in her home in 2002. Who could have wanted her dead? When detectives began to investigate, they discovered clues that might point to someone in her inner circle, as seen in this clip from the Dec. 21 episode of Philly Homicide, a new Oxygen True Crime series hosted by Lieutenant Chris McMullin of the Bucks County Sheriff’s Office.

When investigating a murder, police tend to look closely at the deceased’s family and friends. Often, the killer is someone the victim knew. That’s exactly what happened after Hufnagle was murdered.

“We circled back to see if Alice had anyone new in her life,” a man involved in investigating the crime says in Showbiz Cheat Sheet’s exclusive clip from the upcoming episode. “One thing we did find was that her youngest daughter, Susan, did have a new person in her life.”

Susan’s new boyfriend quickly became a person of interest in the case.

“His name was Mike, and we had been only together for less than a month. He only met mom once,” explains Hufnagle’s daughter Susan Benatti.

Mike might not have known his new girlfriend’s mom well, but there were some aspects of his background that made police want to give him a closer look.

For one, Mike worked at a restaurant just a few miles from Hufnagle’s home. Detectives decided to pay him a visit, and during the interview, they noticed he had a suspicious injury on his hand.

“He had an injury to his hand at the relevant time. He had a connection to the family. He could easily have deduced where Alice lived from his proximity to her daughter,” another man explains.

But what was most alarming to police was Mike’s troubling past.

“He had what appeared to be a previous involvement with domestic violence,” the man continues.

Specifically, Mike’s own mother had filed for an order of protection against her son. Was it possible that he had now turned on another older woman in his life? Detectives would have their work cut out for them if they wanted to uncover who was really responsible for this horrific crime.
