The award-winning actors are reportedly quietly dating—and joking about being the “new” Swift and Kelce. Ahead, details from the report and what Streep and Short have said about it. Spoiler: They emphatically deny the relationship rumors. </p>

<p id=”par-2_44″>A September 2024 <a href=”https://www.closerweekly.com/posts/meryl-streep-and-martin-short-the-new-taylor-and-travis-exclusive/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Closer</a> report claims the two Hollywood mainstays have, as the outlet described, a “quiet romance” that’s “blossoming.” A source allegedly close to both Short and Streep claimed: “Everyone knows they’re together. It makes no sense that they wouldn’t just admit it.” </p>
<p id=”par-3_25″>“They’re both enjoying all the attention and whispers,” the insider added. “They’ve been joking with friends that they’re the new <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/travis-kelce-brings-major-first-relationships-taylor-swift.html/”>Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce</a>!” </p>
<p id=”par-4_52″>The Grammy winner and Kansas City Chiefs tight end began dating in the summer of 2023. Since then, their highly publicized romance has taken the NFL—and Eras tour—by storm. If Streep and Short do indeed have a romance brewing, they’re not quite on Swift and Kelce’s level yet with discussing it publicly. </p>

They were, as described by <a href=”https://www.vanityfair.com/style/story/are-meryl-streep-and-martin-short-dating-relationship-timeline” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Vanity Fair</a>, seen looking “quite cozy” at the <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/tag/golden-globes/”>Golden Globes</a>. A major announcement regarding Streep’s marriage a few months prior, in October 2023, only added fuel to the relationship rumor fire. </p>
<p id=”par-6_38″>At the time, Streep’s reps confirmed she and her <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/the-crazy-way-a-shattered-meryl-streep-met-her-husband-don-gummer.html/”>longtime husband, Don Gummer</a>, had separated “more than six years ago.” Meanwhile, Short’s marriage to his longtime wife, Nancy Dolan, ended in 2010 when she died of ovarian cancer. </p>
<p id=”par-7_50″>What followed were various sightings of Streep and Short together, sometimes on red carpets and sometimes in more casual settings. In February 2024, they were spotted having dinner with friends in Santa Monica, California. A month later, they saw the Tony Award-winning revival of the “Merrily We Roll Along” musical. </p>

<p id=”par-9_49″>Sadly, it seems Streep and Short are <em>not</em> actually on their way to following in Swift and Kelce’s footsteps as one of the world’s most talked about couples. Reps for both stars have insisted, since the beginning of the romance rumors, that there are no sparks flying between them. </p>
<p id=”par-10_48″>As the outlet noted, their reps said they were only friends after being spotted at the 2024 Golden Globes in January. Short later reiterated the point himself. “We are not a couple, we are just very close friends,” he said on the “Club Random with Bill Maher” podcast.</p>
<p id=”par-11_59″>Rumors once again flared up when, in August 2024, the two were seen holding hands during a party for the <em>Only Murders in the Building</em> Season 4 premiere. After a Page Six source inside the party described the pair as being “in great spirits, laughing” and “very sweet and cute,” reps came back with the same “just friends” statement. </p>
