Meghan Markle may be facing a fresh wave of criticism and bombshell allegations, but her brand is stronger for it. A PR expert says the Duchess of Sussex, 40, is likely to have fans “doubling down on their support,” which in turn protects her brand.

Negative press helps ‘insulate’ Meghan’s brand

Speaking to <a href=”https://www.express.co.uk/news/royal/2004652/meghan-markle-criticism-brand-boost?int_source=mantis_rec&int_medium=web&int_campaign=more_like_this” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Express, PR expert Renae Smith shared how the criticism Meghan—and Prince Harry—have recently received, namely the claims made in a Vanity Fair report, help “insulate” her brand.

“From a PR standpoint, this Vanity Fair piece isn’t particularly groundbreaking. It echoes past allegations about Meghan’s alleged treatment of staff,” the founder and director of The Atticism said.

“The timing, coinciding with her Netflix show launch, is notable but not surprising,” Smith said about With Love, Meghan, the duchess’s new lifestyle show. Originally slated to begin streaming in January 2025, the series premiere was pushed back to March 2025 due to the Los Angeles, Calif., wildfires.

“Polarising [sic] figures like Meghan tend to attract both fervent supporters and critics. And this dichotomy has only deepened over time,” Smith explained. “Her audience, made up of those who admire her aspirational lifestyle, independence, and narrative of resilience, is unlikely to be swayed by negative press. In fact, they often respond by doubling down on their support.”

Meghan’s ‘bond’ with fans is stronger because of the criticism

<figure class=”wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio” id=”emb-1″>

<iframe title=”Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visit L.A. wildfire evacuees #shorts” width=”925″ height=”520″ src=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/o7Q7aTWz2n8?feature=oembed” frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share” referrerpolicy=”strict-origin-when-cross-origin” allowfullscreen>

The expert continued, explaining how “polarising [sic] figures” such as President Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Kim Kardashian can do “insane things.” Meanwhile, their supporters stay “fiercely loyal.” The same applies to Meghan.

“The Netflix show, which plays directly to this demographic, will likely resonate strongly with her core base, who will defend her aggressively regardless of external criticism,” Smith said.

“The PR reality—insane but true—is that once someone reaches this level of polarisation [sic], their brand actually becomes insulated. Criticism may make headlines but it rarely shifts perceptions within their established audience.”

“Criticism becomes fuel for their narratives, and their audiences see it as proof that they’re ‘doing something right,’” she explained. “Meghan is no different. Her polarisation [sic] creates a shield that strengthens her bond with her fans, regardless of the media cycle.”

So, the bombshell claims and criticism about how she and the Duke of Sussex, 40, reacted to the California wildfires is, in a roundabout way, good for Meghan’s brand despite having to reportedly “explain herself” and the allegations to friends and loved ones. Whether or not it will translate to higher viewership for With Love, Meghan, or sales when American Riviera Orchard finally launches remains to be seen.

The criticism doesn’t seem to have impacted Meghan’s relationship with Netflix executives

Netflix executives are standing behind Meghan—and Harry—amid the latest wave of criticism. Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s Chief Content Office told <a href=”https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14355823/Netflix-Meghan-Harry-excited-future-projects-cooking-deal.html” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Daily Mail at the 2025 Next on Netflix Preview Event in Los Angeles, Calif., the streamer is “excited” about what’s ahead.

Asked where Netflix “stands with that deal”—the one Harry and Meghan inked in 2020—Bajaria replied: “We have Meghan’s new show coming out, which is great. It is such a great take on a lifestyle show and showcase for California, Montecito, and nature. It really has great takeaways. I was like, ‘oh my God, I want to really do that pasta.’ There’s really easy great takeaways on life. I am really excited about that coming out.”

Bajaria also shared that Netflix’s adaptation of Carley Fortune’s novel, Meet Me at the Lake, is currently in “development.” As for whether or not it’s “definitely coming out,” she reiterated that it’s “in development.” Additionally that Meghan [and Archewell Productions] “had it and we are happy to do it.”

“And we have things in development. Everyone is excited about what is coming,” the Netflix exec added, saying she’s “excited” for With Love, Meghan. The show premieres on March 4, 2025.

However, Meghan’s show wasn’t listed in the streamer’s brochure about their upcoming releases. Nor were any other Sussex projects referenced during Bajaria’s hour-long presentation about what’s ahead at the streamer.
