Multiple women who participated in the U.K. version of Married at First Sight say they were raped or sexually assaulted by their partners during their time on the show.

In a bombshell investigation by the <a href=”https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cp8pz1k4r2lo” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>BBC’s Panorama, three women allege that they were assaulted after getting “married” to their expert-picked partners on the popular relationship series. (Unlike in the U.S. version of MAFS, the wedding on MAFS UK are not legally binding.)

The two women who say they were raped by their husbands spoke to the BBC about their experiences. They were not identified by name in the report. One said that after her husband violently raped her, he threatended her with an acid attack. A third woman, Shona Maderson, accused her partner of a non-consensual sex act. The men deny the accusations.

Channel 4, which airs Married at First Sight UK, has said it’s investigating the allegations. All episodes have been pulled from streaming and broadcast. According to the BBC, Channel 4 was previously aware of some of the incidents but still broadcast episodes featuring the women.

Can reality shows keep cast members safe?

The Married at First Sight allegations are far from the first time that reality show participants have accused producers of looking the other way when cast members engage in harmful or illegal behavior, or when show participants are assaulted during filming.

In 2023, Tran Dang, a participant on Love Is Blind Season 5, sued the show’s producers. She said her fiancé, Thomas Smith, assaulted her during their Mexican honeymoon. Dang and Smith were subsequently cut from the season, and their footage never aired. On the same season of the Netflix series, Renee Poche got engaged to Carter Wall. They were also cut from the season. In a <a href=”https://www.today.com/popculture/love-is-blind-lawsuit-renee-poche-engagement-explained-rcna132127″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>lawsuit Poche later filed against the Love Is Blind producers, she said that Wall displayed “erratic and alarming behavior and emotional instability.” She said she was “terrified” of her “emotionally abusive” husband-to-be. However, producers pressured her to keep filming or risk legal action.

Much of The Valley Season 2 focused on the breakdown of Brittany Cartwright’s marriage to fellow Vanderpump Rules alum Jax Taylor. Viewers watched as an angry Jax tells his wife he’s watching her every move. In one episode, she accused him of flipping a table at her, which struck her leg. And she detailed more of his violent behavior during the season 2 reunion. Jax ultimately left The Valley, but <a href=”https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/jax-taylor-domestic-abuse-the-valley-bravo-1236474546/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>critics accused Bravo of downplaying the extent of his abuse.

In Netflix’s 2026 docuseries, Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, cycle 2 contestant Shandi Sullivan recalls being raped by a male model during a party with other cast members in Milan. The production crew filmed the assault rather than intervene. When the episode aired in 2004, the incident was framed as drunken mistake on Shandi’s part, which led to a tearful confession to her longtime boyfriend. In reality, Shandi said, she was too drunk to consent to any sexual activity.

“All I remember is just like, just like remember him on top of me,” she said. “I was blacked out. No one did anything to stop it. And it all got filmed, all of it.”

After filming The Bachelor, Cassie Underwood got a restraining order against Colton Underwood after she accused him of stalking her. The incident raised questions about the show’s ability to vet its cast members. TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé aired episodes featuring Geoffrey Paschel even after he’d been accused of attacking a previous girlfriend. (Paschel is currently serving 18 years for that assault.) And over the years, viewers of Married at First Sight, Love Is Blind, The Bachelor, and other shows have raised questions about the alarming behavior of some cast members. Those incidents raise serious questions about what, if anything, producers are doing to keep cast members safe, and what responsibility they have when things do go wrong.
