M.I.A. Called Out Beyoncé and Jay-Z: ‘I’m Coming for Everyone Now’

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ arrest has now put the spotlight on Jay-Z. In December 2024, an accuser came forward to allege that Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, raped her while Combs and another celebrity were present. This negative press brought M.I.A’s negative commentary about Jay-Z and Beyoncé to light. Here’s what M.I.A., told her social media followers about what Jay-Z advised her to do when she signed on to his record label.

M.I.A. claimed Jay-Z advised her to get plastic surgery when she signed on to Roc Nation

Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, better known as M.I.A., has an axe to grind with Jay-Z. She joined Roc Nation management in May 2012 before releasing her fourth album, Matangi. M.I.A. announced her departure from the label in December 2013. The relationship between the rapper and the label soured after Roc Nation pulled a trailer for the documentary showing the making of her album.

M.I.A. took to Instagram Live on Nov. 30, 2024, to discuss her experience working with Jay-Z when she signed on to Roc Nation. She explained that Jay-Z requested that she obtain plastic surgery — but she refused.

“Even when I met Jay-Z and I signed to Roc Nation, the first thing he told me to do is get plastic surgery,” she said in the livestream, according to the Instagram account <a href=”https://www.instagram.com/reel/DC-wQietKos/?utm_source=ig_embed&ig_rid=b3a468bb-2973-4196-9e94-812c0b57c574″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Live Bitez. “I’m not insecure, because I would’ve got plastic surgery. So their argument of, ‘Maya’s f***ing insecure, that’s why she needs to f***ing massage her ego,’ fails. Fails, because you turn around and ask what women do you know who hasn’t had plastic surgery around you? All of them have. I’m the only one who didn’t, which already proves the fact it’s not insecurity. Because if I was insecure, I would have done that 100 times over.”

M.I.A. continued by explaining that she’s nearly 50 now and completely fine with never going under the knife. “Guess what? I’m 50. And I’m totally fine with the fact I am, because, yeah, I f***ing took off when I was 30,” she continued. “Because it took 10 more f***ing years than any other motherf***er, because I was the first, and I was the new. And I was, like, making something interesting happen that wasn’t f***ing happening before.”

M.I.A. also came for Beyoncé and Adele

Not only did M.I.A. speak about Jay-Z in her rant, but she mentioned Beyoncé and Adele. She noted that people in the music industry are quick to thank Beyoncé when she’s the one who deserves praise.

“I find it difficult that when people make it, they all can turn around and thank Beyoncé, because that’s f***ed it, and enough is enough,” she said. “I’m f***ing coming for everyone now.”

M.I.A. continued by noting that Adele’s career “would not exist” without her, as she made Jonathan Dickins into a British talent manager. Dickins represented Adele starting in 2006.

“And even Adele, because she’s retired now, but her career would not exist if I hadn’t made Jonathan Dickins into a manager, who is her manager,” M.I.A. said. ‘I’m sick and tired of all the f***ing women who don’t want to give respect to me because I’m a brown woman in music.”

The rapper criticized the Black Lives Matter movement following the release of Beyoncé’s ‘Formation’

Beyoncé’s hit song, “Formation,” celebrates her identity and success as a Black woman in the music industry. However, M.I.A. didn’t think that Beyonce was hitting on anything groundbreaking with the song. The rapper commented on the Black Lives Matter movement while speaking to ES Magazine in 2016.

“It’s interesting that in America the problem you’re allowed to talk about is Black Lives Matter,” M.I.A. said, according to <a href=”https://www.digitalspy.com/music/a791393/mia-has-a-problem-with-beyonce-and-blacklivesmatter/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Digital Spy. “It’s not a new thing to me — it’s what Lauryn Hill was saying in the 1990s, or Public Enemy in the 1980s. Is Beyoncé or Kendrick Lamar going to say Muslim Lives Matter? Or Syrian Lives Matter? Or this kid in Pakistan matters? That’s a more interesting question.”

As a child who escaped war in Sri Lanka, M.I.A. frequently raps about the refugee crisis. “I came from war,” she continued. “When I was growing up, I didn’t really think I’d live beyond about 25. I never thought I would be old enough to drive or have a house or raise a child. Having to do it is really difficult.”
