King Charles Was ‘Anxious’ About 1 Part of His Coronation — And It’s Not What You Think

King Charles officially became king immediately following the death of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who died in 2022 at the age of 96. However, Charles also had a coronation celebration, which was the official crowning ceremony for him and his wife, Camilla Parker Bowles.

Although Charles’ coronation went smoothly, he recently revealed that there was one thing he was feeling “anxious” about in the moment.

Charles had spent his whole life working toward becoming king. He served under the queen from the time he was young, and once it was his turn, there were almost certainly a number of things he was feeling uneasy about. However, in a recent documentary, the king also admitted that he was “anxious” about wearing such a large crown.

In a documentary called “Coronation Girls,” Charles was seen talking to women who had previously attended Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation back in 1953. When one woman mentioned wearing such a heavy crown, Charles had a surprising remark. “It is much heavier and taller, so there’s always that feeling of feeling slightly anxious, in case it wobbles,” he said. “You have to carry it; you have to look straight ahead.”

There were likely plenty of things on Charles’ mind the day of his coronation, but it’s surprising to learn that wearing the crown was one of them. At the time, Charles was also in the midst of a feud with his younger son, Prince Harry, though Harry did fly out from California to attend the coronation.

Prince William, Charles’ oldest son, is next in line for the throne alongside his wife, Kate Middleton. However, Charles reportedly isn’t ready to inundate William with too much responsibility. Sources have actually referred to it as a power struggle, though it’s likely just Charles’ way of making sure William doesn’t take on too much while trying to balance raising his family.

This year was challenging for the royals, as Charles and Kate both underwent chemotherapy for cancer treatment. Charles is likely doing his best to protect his son by continuing to fulfill as many royal duties as he can. It’s unclear whether Charles would ever consider stepping down at some point to allow William and Kate to take over — probably not until Louis is at least 18, which is more than a decade away.
