Beyoncé made history when she won her Grammy award for Album of the Year. It was an honor that many felt was a long time coming, including her Destiny’s Child bandmate Kelly Rowland. But there was another celebrated awards show that Rowland called out for refusing to give Beyoncé her flowers.

What Kelly Rowland said about Beyoncé Grammy win

<figure class=”wp-block-image size-full” id=”emb-1″><img decoding=”async” src=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/kelly-rowland-beyonce.webp?strip=all&quality=80″ alt=”Kelly Rowland sitting next to Beyonce at the Essence Music Festival day 2.” class=”wp-image-3779091″>
Beyonce and Kelly Rowland | Ray Tamarra/Getty Images

Rowland and Beyoncé were already very familiar with the Grammy Awards. The prestigious ceremony nominated the two, alongside Michelle Williams, for 14 awards when they were still a part of the group Destiny’s Child. When the trio went their separate ways, however, the recording Academy recognized Beyoncé even more for her solo efforts. The “Crazy In Love” singer took home 35 awards over the course of her career, surpassing even Michael Jackson’s Grammy wins.

However, Beyoncé’s winning streak only highlighted the fact that she never won Album of the Year. Her husband, Jay-Z, famously mentioned the suspicious snub when he accepted Dr. Dre’s Global Impact Award.

“I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year. So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that. The most Grammys… Never won Album of the Year. That doesn’t work,” he said at the 2024 Grammys.

Rowland couldn’t have been prouder of Jay-Z for speaking out against the Grammys, as she’d been sharing those sentiments for a long time.

“Shawn Carter is one of the greatest men I know and his words ring so loud to me,” Rowland said in an interview with ET. “I couldn’t be more proud of him. And I’m just really happy for a lot of things that he said.”

But apart from the Grammys, Rowland was disappointed in the Emmys for not awarding Beyoncé any of its prizes. Beyoncé’s Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce was a 2019 documentary concert film released on Netflix covering the singer’s 2018 Coachella performance. It enjoyed enough critical acclaim to win a Best Music Film award at the Grammys, and a Best Music Documentary Award at the IDA Documentary Awards.

Additionally, it was nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards. Winning television’s greatest honor would’ve been historical, as it could’ve brought Beyoncé closer to EGOT status. However, Homecoming lost all the categories it was competing for. Rowland was among a few critics who felt the documentary deserved much more than the Emmys were willing to give.

“Only because I know that she lost sleep. It was Homecoming. The culture of it. The pride in it. The passion behind it. The countless sleepless hours, I know what those are, I know what those were for her. So yeah, I think she was robbed,” Rowland said in an interview with Extra TV.

Homecoming wasn’t the only time Beyoncé was nominated for the Emmys. In 2016, she received four Emmy nominations for her Lemonade TV special, which aired on HBO. However, the singer once again fell short when it came to taking home any awards. Many fans believed it was yet another example of the industry robbing their idol. While speaking with Elle, the “Say My Name” artist finally addressed how she really felt about the issue.

“I began to search for deeper meaning when life began to teach me lessons I didn’t know I needed. Success looks different to me now,” she said. “I learned that all pain and loss is in fact a gift. Having miscarriages taught me that I had to mother myself before I could be a mother to someone else. Then I had Blue, and the quest for my purpose became so much deeper. I died and was reborn in my relationship, and the quest for self became even stronger. It’s difficult for me to go backwards. Being ‘number one’ was no longer my priority. My true win is creating art and a legacy that will live far beyond me. That’s fulfilling.”
