The Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) is one of the most fashionable women in the world. She has made best-dressed lists countless times and is responsible for what’s known as “The Kate Effect.” That’s when the princess is photographed wearing something and orders and sales for that particular item or outfit surge and sell out.

While many agree Prince William’s wife never gets it wrong whenever she steps out in public, there was a time she was seen out with her shirt on backwards. Here’s more on that, plus a few other fashion faux pas for members of Britain’s most famous family.

Kate made a public appearance with her blouse on the wrong way

<figure class=”wp-block-image size-full” id=”emb-1″><img decoding=”async” src=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Kate-Middleton-visits-the-Henry-Fawcett-Childrens-Center-in-London-England-1.webp?strip=all&quality=80″ alt=”Kate Middleton visits the Henry Fawcett Children’s Center in London, England” class=”wp-image-3782182″>
Kate Middleton visits the Henry Fawcett Children’s Center in London, England | Neil Mockford/GC Images

While Kate doesn’t have someone actually dressing her like some other high-ranking royals, it’s unthinkable that with a full staff of people employed in the royal household someone would let the princess walk out of the house with her designer blouse on backward. But that’s exactly what happened in 2019 when she visited a center for children in London.

Kate wore a long-sleeved lavender Gucci pussybow blouse to the Henry Fawcett Children’s Center. The pictures from that day show the princess donning the top with the buttons going down the front. However, images of that same shirt on Gucci’s website show the buttons are supposed to go down the back.

Kate still looked great with her shirt worn that way leaving some to wonder if she really didn’t know or did it on purpose to put her own spin on it.

Other embarrassing royal fashion moments

There have been a few other royal family fashion mishaps in the past. In 2018, when Kate’s sister-in-law, Meghan Markle, was still a working royal she was photographed during the final day of her New Zealand tour in a blue pleated skirt by Givenchy. The only problem with that is that it was completely sheer in certain lighting as the duchess’s undergarments were visible.

Kate’s husband also had a head-scratching fashion fail when he attended the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. While sitting on stage, Prince William crossed his legs and that’s when those in the audience noticed a large hole in the bottom of his shoe.

And who can forget Queen Elizabeth’s badly stained dress in 2010 when she attended King Constantine of Greece’s 70th birthday party? Pictures released from the affair showed the late queen in a pale blue dress which had several stains down the side of it. In that case though it’s highly unlikely that she left her residence that way as it was far too noticeable.

Either Queen Camilla Just Adopted a New Fashion Trend or Forgot to Look in the Mirror Before She Stepped Out

It was later confirmed that she did not. A member of the wait staff at the party accidentally got the mess all over the queen. While some thought the substance that caused the stains was from food, the <a href=”https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1283704/Queen-food-stains-dress-breaks-bag-King-Constantines-birthday-party.html” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Daily Mail reported that it was actually from “coffee spillage.”

In addition to her dress being soiled, Queen Elizabeth’s shimmery silver handbag had a problem as well. A number of photos showed her clutching it oddly because the chain strap on it broke somehow.

Each of these instances are a reminder that even royalty can experience fashion issues just like the rest of us.
