How These 1960s Songs All Came Back in the 1980s

1960s music was almost as popular in the 1980s as it was in the 1960s. During the Reagan years, 1960s songs like The Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There” and Petula Clark’s “Downtown” came back with a new sound. Some of these remakes were better than others.

1. ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’

How do you make a 1960s bubblegum hit sound fresh and hip in the late 1980s? First, you get a younger singer to cover it. Then, you add a cheesy dance beat. Voilà. That’s how Tommy James and the Shondells’ “I Think We’re Alone Now” was brought to life for a new generation by Tiffany.

Tiffany’s cover is nowhere near as good as the original. For a lot of listeners, that’s alright. If you were a preteen at a certain time, Tiffany was the coolest person on earth. Also, Tommy James and the Shondells never inspired a Full House episode.

2. ‘Stand by Me’

Some 1960s tunes are, for better or worse, very dated. Ben E. King’s “Stand by Me” is about as timeless as a pop song could possibly get. Its melody is impeccable, and its desperate lyrics about love are universal. It’s no surprise that “Stand by Me” inspired covers by luminaries like John Lennon, Otis Redding, and Florence and the Machine.

The movie Stand by Me, an adaptation of Stephen King’s novella The Body, brought the original “Stand by Me” back to the radio. The track was more popular in the 1980s than it ever had been. It’ll be with us for decades to come.

3. ‘I Saw Her Standing There’

Tiffany again! This time, she had the approval of two Beatles. “I actually hung out with Ringo Starr quite a bit when I was in London for different things,” she told <a href=”https://www.songfacts.com/blog/interviews/tiffany” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>SongFacts in 2017. “I would seem to always bump into him, and he was always wonderful and just fun. I hope I didn’t dork out too much. But, it was a big honor.”

Paul McCartney praised her version of “I Saw Her Standing There,” retitled “I Saw Him Standing There.” “Paul McCartney was asked in an interview one time about that, and he gave the thumbs-up,” Tiffany recalled. “He said, ‘I think they did a good version.’ So, that was awesome. You don’t know what the other artists or the writers of the song are going to think.”

4. ‘Downtown’

Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s Net Worth Could Take ‘Significant Hit Immediately’ Following Allegations, Former Prosecutor Says

This is the worst thing on the list by far. Petula Clark was far from the most impressive British Invasion artist, but her soaring pop hit “Downtown” is hard not to love. The guitar-free anti-rock of the 1960s was often flaccid, but the original “Downtown” is a master class in that style done right. Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons wish they had a song that good under their belts.

“Downtown ’88” is a pseudo-remix that doesn’t even replace Clark’s backing track. It just plays a dance beat on top of the original song. That’s jaw-droppingly unprofessional. Somehow, Brits ate it up!

5. ‘The Loco-Motion’

Apparently, 1987 was the year of youngsters doing dance covers of 1960s bubblegum songs. The same year Tiffany became the world’s most sought-after karaoke singer, Kylie Minogue made an unimpressive debut with a cover of “The Loco-Motion” that makes Little Eva’s version sound like a five-star classic.

Minogue was 21 when she made this music video. Watching her chipper demeanor, she seemed like she could have been another fly-by-night singer. Somehow, this cover was the beginning of a long (and pretty awesome) career as one of the biggest stars who is not a household name in the United States.
