How a Rapper Ruined The Rolling Stones’ ‘Miss You’

Some classic rock fans think that rap is the enemy of rock ‘n’ roll. That’s a bogus narrative — but rap is definitely the enemy of The Rolling Stones’ “Miss You.” When a famous hip-hop artist remixed The Rolling Stones’ big dance hit, he managed to remove all the charm. Given what Mick Jagger said about “Miss You,” we can only wonder what he thought about this awful remix.

Dr. Dre ruined The Rolling Stones’ ‘Miss You’ for a famous movie

Disco was a defining genre of the 1970s. When The Rolling Stones released “Miss You,” they paved the way for many rock acts to follow suit. Soon Kiss, Queen, Rod Stewart, Blondie, and others were all trying to sound like Donna Summer.

Austin Powers in Goldmember is partly an homage to the disco era, but it was also trying to appeal to a 2002 audience. It made sense for a 2000s celebrity to remix “Miss You” for that movie’s soundtrack. Dr. Dre did the honors and his revamped version of “Miss You” is <a href=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msaKksd6fOg” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>available on YouTube.

Dre is a legend so his remix of a legendary song should have been incredible. Instead, he tried his best to replace the production of the original track with some of the most dated early 2000s hip-hop production I’ve ever heard. No matter how much you love Dre, The Rolling Stones, rap, disco, or Mike Myers, there’s no way you could possibly think Dre’s “Miss You” works.

The sad thing is that Dre’s work as a producer is often really incredible. He produced The Chronic, after all! His “Miss You” could have been an excellent update of a classic song.

The same year the Goldmember soundtrack hit stores, Junkie XL put out a remix of Elvis Presley’s “A Little Less Conversation” that introduced the song (and the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll) to a new generation. Dre’s “Miss You” could have done the same for The Rolling Stones.

During a 1995 interview with <a href=”https://www.rollingstone.com/feature/mick-jagger-remembers-92946/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Rolling Stone, Jagger explained the cultural atmosphere that led him to write Some Girls, the parent album of “Miss You.” “I’d moved to New York at that point,” he said. “The inspiration for the record was really based in New York and the ways of the town. I think that gave it an extra spur and hardness. And then, of course, there was the punk thing that had started in 1976. Punk and disco were going on at the same time, so it was quite an interesting period. New York and London, too. Paris — there was punk there. Lots of dance music. Paris and New York had all this Latin dance music, which was really quite wonderful.”

The “Dancing in the Street” singer explained how soul legend Billy Preston helped him write “Miss You.” “Billy had shown me the four-on-the-floor bass drum part, and I would just play the guitar,” he recalled. “I remember playing that in the El Mocambo club when Keith was on trial in Toronto for whatever he was doing. We were supposed to be there making this live record.” Jagger agreed with a reporter’s assessment that “Miss You” had one of the best grooves of The Rolling Stones’ career.

The famous groove from The Rolling Stones’ “Miss You” wasn’t there when Dre flattened it.
