Halle Berry Once Shared Why It Was Really Important to Get Her Role in ‘The Flintstones’

Halle Berry has starred in many movies that were important to her career, including Monster’s Ball, which won her an Oscar. But another project she considered a huge career milestone was the 1994 classic The Flintstones. Berry believed the famous live-action adaptation had the potential to change the way audiences saw Black women on the big screen.

Berry famously played secretary Miss Stone in the 1994 classic, a character who’d use her charms to try and seduce John Goodman’s Fred Flintstone. But the role wasn’t meant for Berry, initially. As the name implies, it was originally actor Sharon Stone’s part for the taking. When the Basic Instinct star couldn’t commit to the feature, Berry was excited about taking her place. But it wasn’t just about securing another potential hit movie for the X-Men alum.

Berry was always conscious of how much of a role model she was, even though being one sometimes hindered her career. Still, as a role model, she felt seeing someone like her in The Flintstones would’ve conveyed further positive imagery for those who looked up to her.

“They originally wanted Sharon Stone or a blond Sharon Stone type,” she once told The New York Times. “I really pushed for the part. It was important to me that a black woman be seen as the object of desire.”

Berry explained her vision to the film’s director Brian Levant, who agreed to cast her in the role not too long after their meeting.

”I convinced him that in this day and age, Bedrock should be integrated, and he seemed to get it,” she said in a separate interview with The New York Times. ”A few days later, they offered me the part. It was significant for me because it was the first time I got a part that was written for a white woman.”

Berry sometimes believed some of her less praised work like Catwoman was more appreciated than her more prestigious films. She felt similarly about The Flintstones’ impact, in a way. The part of Ms. Stone became one of her most iconic and memorable roles, with fans still messaging her about it to this day. So for The Flintstones’ 30th anniversary, Berry decided to give both her and the movie’s fanbase a special treat.

“You guys message me every year about The Flintstones film, so I thought I’d do something special for the 30th anniversary. Love you all for loving Miss Stone all this time,” she wrote on her Instagram.

Watching the film might’ve been like seeing it for the first time for Berry, who admitted she hadn’t revisited the movie in 20 years. She also emphasized the importance of starring in The Flintstones for her culture.

“Being a Black woman in Bedrock seemed like a little thing but, you know, The Flintstones was the fabric of our culture,” she said. “I knew that this was a big step forward for Black people, Black women especially.”

While taking her trip down memory lane, Berry highlighted how young she was back then, and the choices she made in her performance. She took a minute to mock the high-pitched voice she used back then to charm Goodman’s Fred Flintstone.

“Like, that was so young-me,” Berry said, while also mentioning the iconic short hair she sported in the take.

Elsewhere, Berry acknowledged the wacky nature of the film. Still, that didn’t nullify its significance.

“While it was silly, and it was over the top and campy, I knew then how important this little part in this big movie actually would be,” she added.

Her followers and fans agreed on the actor’s page that her part in The Flintstones was just as important as she hoped it’d be.
